About Mathieu

Whether you are learning to use your voice at the beginning of your artistic voyage or a seasoned professional looking for supportive methods that open you up to your full potential, Welcome! I'm a French American voice teacher based in London UK. I started my career as a singer, guitarist and writer before forming an Alternative Rock band, RECKLESS JACKS, 12 years ago. We have had TV appearances, performed over 80 shows in UK and EU, and worked with many accomplished producers like Jim Lowe (Stereophonics), Julian Kindred (Ellie Goulding), and Bob Matthews (Alpines). With my extensive experience as a musician, bandleader and working with several artists on their development before evolving into a trained vocalist and coach, I can recognise the effort and obstacles faced when attempting to connect with our own voices. Over the years, I have studied several recognised techniques that shape my vocal training methods to support your voice journey and correspond to individual needs with a more meaningful and authentic path. As singing is a process that goes beyond the voice, I consider my clients' mind, body, and spirit as I guide them through any performance anxieties, removing tension and live techniques. Whether you are pursuing a career in music or simply have a true passion for singing, it is a pleasure for me to share knowledge that can underpin and enhance your vocal abilities. I look forward to speaking to you and learning more about how I can help you on this journey! Thank you, Matt

The Artistic Science of Voice Singing teacher and vocal performance coach, with extensive knowledge in several highly recognised voice development methods. Working with a wide range of vocal abilities from Established Artists to those at the beginning of their vocal journey. Clients: YELLOWSTRAPS FENDA Adam Anderson (HURTS) Tommy Hill (I know, I know) Oliver Keane Jennings Couch, James Deacon. Partnerships: Holywell Studio Flowstate studio COACHING FOCUS: *Breath Control Control of the Sub-glottal and Supra-glottal air pressure. *Voice Development I work together with artists to create a personal voice “toolbox” that teaches them techniques, supports their vocal freedom and guides them as they achieve their individual targeted goals. - Mixed voice (finding the right balance between control and power through your range) - Safe Belting - Stamina increase - Resonance - Optimisation of Vocal Folds closure - Thyroid Tilt (Cry) - Tongue Control - Soft Palate control (Oral vs Nasalised sound) - False Vocal Folds control/ Release pressure on your Vocal Folds - Voice development through SOVT exercises (Tubes, straws, ...) *Vocal Health Vocal health is often overlooked but can be easily implemented with the right knowledge about your particular voice, how best to hydrate your vocal folds, and adopting a good warm-up routine that is tailored to you. I employ SOVT (Semi Occluded Vocal Tract) exercises in my coaching which goes far beyond voice development, by assisting with defining the best and healthiest movements for my clients when performing/ singing. This then results in the release of tension on the vocal folds and develops stamina. *Body awareness through vocal performance I like to incorporate some Alexander technique exercises in my mentoring. By working on body awareness we ultimately develop vocal performance. It is important to understand the psychological impact that physiological attention brings to the table. Knowing how to use your body when performing will bring more ease when approaching the psychological aspect of singing. *Mentoring for live shows & Performance anxiety We need to understand that singers are performers whose instrument resides within their body. I take into consideration the psychological and emotional characteristics of singing when developing a voice. My goal is to prepare artists to approach live performance with the correct mindset working in conjunction with technique and body language so that their vocal performance is fully optimised. *Artistic development My intention and aspiration as a contemporary commercial vocal coach is to support singers in finding their voice and developing techniques to optimise vocal performance while retaining the individualism of their voice. Every voice is unique and it is important to not lose the distinctive essence of their artistry when training and developing.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

My passion for music came at an early age, I picked up the guitar at the age of 10 and started singing soon after.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I come from a Pop and Rock music background myself but I really believe that the future of music relies on blending genres. Nowadays I coach singers with a broad spectrum of influences from, Neo Soul to hip hop, Jazz, Rock, etc.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

As a vocal coach you face different types of challenges, from preparing an artist to perform in front of a large audience to getting a student to sing a song for the first time. Both are as rewarding in my opinion.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Singing is probably the most peculiar instrument to master as WE are the instrument. As it's part of us and directly linked to our muscle memory, there is an important psychological element to take in consideration when developing vocal skills.
  • What are your keys to success?

I always tell my students resilience is the real talent.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

    1. Chris Cornell (SoundGarden) as he is my musical hero.
    2. Prince, as I think he is a true musical genius.
    3. Marvin Gaye, he is the Soul of music to my eyes.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I have a student who started as a beginner in singing who recently got a busking licence in a busy London spot.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Teaching singing is as much a passion to me as singing an music in general are. :)
