Secondary School Mathematics Teacher in French – Clear, Supportive, and Effective // Professeure de mathématiques en français – niveau secondaire, méthode claire et efficace

I met Alba in 2014 when I moved to Mexico City for a public health research experience. Although I am Latina, I did not speak Spanish growing up; my grandparents decided to not teach my parents the language in an effort to assimilate to US culture. While I understand where they were coming from, I always wished that I could speak Spanish, to deepen my connection to my culture and connect with others through the beautiful language. Therefore, learning Spanish was a goal of mine when I moved to Mexico City.

Alba and I met living in the same neighborhood of Coyoacán and she became my Spanish teacher. I am forever grateful for meeting her!

She is an incredible Spanish teacher and human for many reasons, including the following. She is empathetic, caring, kind, and patient. She deeply values getting to know new people and she deeply values her family, friends, and the people in her life. She understands humans very well, through being very intuitive and through asking great questions. She is curious about the world and one of the most well-travelled people I know! She is an artist and Renaissance woman, who is deeply talented, creative, and hard working.

These attributes translate into very effective teaching methods. At the beginning, she spoke with me to understand why I wanted to learn Spanish, what level of familiarity I had with the language, and what my personality is like.

This conversation gave her a sense of my motivations for learning, my skill level, how I learn, and how I express myself. This resulted in her very personalized teaching style, which honored why I wanted to learn, taught me foundational Spanish language skills, and did so in a way where I could both express myself and meaningfully connect with others.

Another thing that Alba picked up on is that I love music and dancing. One of my favorite memories with her was this: in the middle of a lesson, she turned on Enrique Iglesia’s song, “Bailando” and my Spanish lesson turned into a fun dance party! After dancing, we then talked about the song as part of the Spanish lesson. Feeling so connected to the song through dance made it easier for me to learn. I am so thankful that Alba incorporated this and other effective teaching methods to help me learn Spanish, which has helped me connect to my culture and connect with others.
