About Perrin

As I was growing up, school taught me that I was smart. It also taught me that I didn’t like English and social studies, but loved math and science. Elementary, junior high, that stayed consistent. In high school, I entered into the dash 1 stream of all my courses. For those who don’t know what that means, it means I took the hardest high school courses. At the end of grade 10, I was given an honors award. This meant that I kept my average grades above 80% in all my classes. In grade 11, something interesting happened. I was in a class with a bad chemistry teacher. I could teach myself the stuff that they didn’t explain, but quite a few students were having trouble. Having won the honors award the year before, and sitting with friends who also won it, our table became the “table of smart people”. At first I just gave my classmates the answers they wanted, then I got irritated since they kept on interrupting my music that I was listening to. I got the bright idea to teach them how to solve the problems so they wouldn’t bug me so much. This worked amazingly. Grade 11 ended with another honors award. Grade 12 started and more chemistry tutoring happened. Grade 12 ended for me with the last honors award and an Alexander Rutherford scholarship. But what stuck with me the most was that one of my chemistry classmates thanked me for teaching them, saying that they wouldn’t have passed if I didn’t teach them. After enrolling in engineering at MacEwan University, then leaving since I didn’t want to work in that field, I tried education. I left that because I was better at tutoring than teaching. I eventually graduated with a diploma in investigative studies with the intention to become a private investigator. Then the pandemic hit and the job field dried up. After some time, through strange luck, I was hired to help a kid on my street with grade 3 math. In one school year, I got him caught up and set to the point that he is now managing grade 4 math on his own. I’m now here, looking for more students who want help.

When I tutor, I first identify what concepts or procedures the student is struggling with (e.g. calculating velocity or math with fractions). I then explain the concept if required, and create problems on the spot that I don’t know the answer to. Then, the student and I work through the problem together. If we differ on a step of the problem, I can quickly correct the error that was made and explain what happened.

I consider tutoring to be less about teaching and more about translating information. I have a large amount of experience explaining various concepts to many different kinds of people.

I am going to teach math and science for all grades, elementary to high school, as well as high school physics and chemistry.
