About Dorothea
I'm a student of Classics at Jesus College, Oxford. I started teaching fellow-students when in 6th Form, and I taught Latin and Greek in summer courses: a Summer School for children aged 10-17 in August 2023 and 2024, and a residential Latin Intensive in August 2024 for adults. I have a great love for languages, especially the Latin and Greek tongues, which led to a very strong performance in grammar and translation at GCSE (9s in Latin and Greek), A-level (A* and A), and Honour Moderations at Oxford. This is due in part to my discovery of spoken Latin and Greek, which has revolutionised how I engage with the texts: from being completely unable to hold Greek vocabulary or complex grammar in memory long-term, I now remember obscure words after months. I am eager to share this approach with students, especially since many people start learning the languages after the brain shift at 14 - i.e. when your capacity to remember random things declines rapidly.
I have an enhanced DBS check, which I can send a copy of if desired.
Outside my degree, I enjoy sewing (particularly repairs) and lace-making.

I was homeschooled through GCSEs and one of my A-levels, achieving 9s in Latin and Ancient Greek at GCSE, and an A* in Ancient History; this allowed me to take up a place at Oxford University in the beautiful college of Jesus. My experience has left me fully convinced of the value of 1-1, personalised classes and it is an experience which I would be overjoyed to impart to others. I have found through much experience that people learn best, not from dry grammar books and sentences which repeat short, dull statements ad nauseam, but with a more vivacious method. I regularly speak Latin and Ancient Greek (last November I was in a performance of the Orestes, sung, spoken and masked as it would have been), and incorporate Latin or Greek speaking into classes in an enjoyable way which allows students to intuitively grasp concepts and look forward realistically to reading 'real' Latin and Greek. I am happy to teach people of any age: I have taught two summer schools of children Latin and Greek, from the age of 10+, and a Latin intensive in liturgical Latin (August 2024) at which I had students in their 80s. All that matters to me is a desire to learn the languages.
