About David

I am a graduate student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a unique dual undergraduate degree in Computer Systems Engineering and Electrical Engineering, currently pursuing my Master's in Systems Engineering and Technology Management. My academic journey has equipped me with both deep theoretical knowledge and extensive hands-on experience across multiple engineering disciplines. As a Research Assistant at both RPI and Sandia National Laboratories, I've developed cutting-edge solutions in machine learning, software development, and system optimization. My work ranges from developing machine unlearning algorithms to leading full-stack development projects and creating innovative hardware solutions like smart dimming sunglasses (currently pending patent). This diverse research background allows me to explain complex concepts through multiple lenses, making difficult topics accessible to students at any level. My teaching experience as a Leading Teaching Assistant at STEAMM Inventor's Studio has shown me the importance of fostering genuine understanding rather than rote memorization. I've mentored students from middle school through undergraduate levels, helping them discover their passion for STEM while building solid foundations in mathematics, physics, and computer science. My approach emphasizes practical applications—I believe students learn best when they understand not just the "how" but also the "why" behind concepts. What truly sets me apart is my commitment to student success. Having navigated challenging coursework myself, I understand the struggles students face and provide patient, encouraging guidance. My bilingual capabilities in English and Mandarin allow me to support international students who may need additional language assistance. Whether you're debugging your first program, preparing for a crucial exam, or exploring advanced machine learning concepts, I'm here to guide you toward mastery with clarity, patience, and enthusiasm. My goal is simple: to transform confusion into confidence and help you achieve your academic and professional aspirations.

Teaching Approach & Methodology My teaching philosophy centers on building intuition before diving into complexity. I believe every student can master technical concepts when they're presented in the right way. I adapt my teaching style to each student's learning pace and background, ensuring no one gets left behind. Teaching Techniques: Visual Learning: I use diagrams, flowcharts, and real-world analogies to explain abstract concepts Hands-on Practice: We code together - I guide while you drive, building confidence through doing Problem Decomposition: Breaking complex problems into manageable chunks Interactive Debugging: Teaching you how to think like a debugger, not just fix errors Bilingual Support: I offer tutoring in both English and Mandarin Chinese (中文), making complex concepts accessible to international students Typical Lesson Structure: Quick Review (5-10 min): Assess current understanding and recap previous materials Concept Introduction (15-20 min): Present new topics with clear examples Guided Practice (20-25 min): Work through problems together with increasing independence Independent Practice (10 min): You solve problems while I provide hints as needed Wrap-up & Planning (5 min): Summarize key points and set goals for next session What Sets Me Apart: Dual Technical Background: My EE/CSE combination means I understand both hardware and software perspectives Research Experience: Currently pursuing OR graduate degree - I bring cutting-edge knowledge to our sessions Cultural Bridge: As someone who's navigated both Eastern and Western education systems, I understand diverse learning styles Patient & Encouraging: I remember struggling with these concepts too - there's no "stupid question" in my sessions Practical Focus: I connect academic concepts to real-world applications and job interviews Who My Lessons Are For: Middle school students needing help with foundational math (algebra, geometry) and physics concepts High school students preparing for AP Computer Science, advanced math, or college-level physics Undergraduate students (Freshman to Senior) struggling with CS/EE fundamentals Graduate students needing help with advanced algorithms or machine learning International students who prefer explanations in Mandarin or need language-supportive teaching Career switchers learning programming from scratch Interview candidates preparing for technical interviews at tech companies Whether you're a middle schooler learning your first algebra equation or a graduate student implementing complex neural networks, I'll meet you where you are and help you reach your goals.
