About Nicholas
If you are a cellist or beginner looking to explore cello I would be a perfect match as a teacher for you! I consider myself a dedicated teacher with a passion for classical music and sharing this with others. I have specialised in early music/historical performance for 8 years and have been teaching privately for 4 years.
At 14 I was awarded a scholarship to study cello at The Purcell School for Young Musicians with Alexander Boyarsky, going on to receive a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music (BMus) with Catherine Rimer and Richard Tunnicliffe, where alongside baroque cello I was trained in chamber music, theory/harmony, composition and harpsichord. I will be returning to the RCM with a full scholarship to complete a Masters in cello. As a performer, I have played under musicians such as John Butt, Laurence Cummings, Monica Huggett and Adrienne Butterfield in venues such as Royal Festival Hall, Cadogan Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the London international Festival of Early Music, and have performed in masterclasses with David Watkin and Robert Cohen.
I have received lessons in Alexander Technique for 9 years and am currently training to teach. I use ideas from the Technique as a fundamental part of my teaching, helping my students develop good habits with their bodies and avoid injury.

Our lessons will include a holistic approach, confronting technique, harmony, and exploring culture/history using both historical and modern resources. In our lessons you will learn how to practise effectively, making it as positive an experience as possible.
I play and teach on a baroque cello, however it is not necessary for you to use one! I am flexible to different learning styles and paces and can teach all ages. I will use ideas from the Alexander Technique to help you to look after your body and avoid strain.
Ultimately, I feel enjoyment and expression are the most important aspects of playing and learning an instrument, and I take this mindset into all my lessons, prioritising your experience as a musician.
I offer lessons at 45 mins, 60 mins and 90 min, and teach both online and in-person in SW London, and may be able to teach at your house depending on your location. I have an up-to-date DBS check.
