About James

Hey, I’m James — a professional music producer, session guitarist, and long-time guitar teacher with a passion for helping players find their sound.

I’ve been playing for over 15 years and have worked across a range of genres from alternative rock to alt-country to modern pop, both live and in studio settings. When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me mixing records, laying down guitar tracks, or nerding out over pedals and tone.

I started teaching because I remember how frustrating it was in the early days — too many lessons felt either boring, rushed, or just plain confusing. I wanted to change that. Whether you're just picking up the guitar or looking to push through a plateau, I aim to be the kind of teacher I wish I had when I started: someone patient, switched on, and actually invested in your progress.

You don’t need to read music. You don’t need to be naturally talented. You just need the right guidance, a good vibe, and a clear path forward.

Every lesson is tailored to you — your goals, your musical taste, and your learning style.

We’ll balance technique and theory with practical playing so that every session feels like progress, not a chore. I teach using real songs (not boring exercises), and I break down everything in a way that makes sense — whether you’re a visual learner, prefer playing by ear, or like to understand the “why” behind the music.

-Lessons usually follow a structure of:
-Quick warm-up / technique booster
-Song or riff focus (chosen by you or based on your level/interests)
-Applied theory or creative task (writing, improvisation, etc.)
-Wrap-up with goals or things to work on

Expect laughs, real talk, and plenty of encouragement. I’m not just here to show you how to play — I want to help you become a guitarist.

Details & Advice
Why Learn With Me?
I teach because I genuinely love helping people get better at something they’re passionate about. My goal isn’t to turn you into a music theory robot — it’s to help you enjoy playing guitar, get confident, and develop your own sound. No judgement, no pressure — just solid guidance, smart strategies, and good vibes.

Lesson Format
Lessons run weekly at a consistent time — either in person at my teaching studio in Bentleigh (VIC) or online via Zoom or Discord. Sessions are available in 30-minute or 60-minute formats, depending on your level, focus, and goals.

Each lesson includes:
- Warm-up and technique focus
- Song learning or creative exercises tailored to your taste
- Jam-style playing, improvisation, or songwriting (depending on level)
- Clear practice goals and resources to guide your week
- Lessons are designed to be enjoyable, engaging, and structured around how you learn best — not some rigid one-size-fits-all method.

Who I Teach
I work with:
- Absolute beginners (kids and adults)
- Teens preparing for VCE or school performances
- Intermediate players wanting to level up technique, theory, or creativity
- Adults returning to guitar after a break
- Neurodivergent students (including ASD) — lessons are flexible, patient, and adapted

I’m also happy to schedule back-to-back lessons for siblings or family members — just let me know what works best for your household.

What You’ll Need
- A guitar (acoustic or electric — whatever excites you!)
- Notebook and a plastic sleeve folder (for in-person students)
- A quiet space and webcam for online students
- Optional: capo, tuner, picks — I’ll advise as needed

No guitar yet? No worries — I can provide a studio instrument for the lesson if needed.

Rates & Value
$45 / Half-Hour Lesson – great for younger students or absolute beginners

$90 / Hour Lesson – ideal for older students, adults, and intermediate players

Hour-long lessons are highly recommended if you’re keen to grow fast, get creative, or explore a mix of technique, theory, and songwriting. They allow us to go deeper without feeling rushed.

What Your Lesson Fee Covers
You're not just paying for time — you're investing in:
- A private, rented teaching studio designed for learning
- Custom materials: tabs, recordings, lesson plans, and video recaps
- Ongoing progress tracking and tailored lesson planning
- Support between lessons if you’re stuck or have questions
- A personalised, high-quality learning experience backed by years of professional music work

I work hard to make sure every lesson is enjoyable, valuable, and something you look forward to each week.

Mobile Lessons
Prefer lessons at home? I offer mobile sessions within the local area for an additional $25 travel fee — perfect for busy families or students who need a little more flexibility or accessibility.

Policies & Expectations
Cancellations & Makeups
I ask for 48 hours’ notice for any cancellations or reschedules. Late cancellations (under 48 hours) may be charged unless there’s a valid reason like illness — I always aim to be fair.
Makeups are offered when possible if you’ve given notice, but they’re not guaranteed.

Public Holidays
Lessons usually run on public holidays unless most students are away — I’ll check in with you to confirm.

Stopping Lessons
If you ever want to pause or finish up lessons, please give two weeks’ notice so I can wrap up your progress and offer the spot to someone else.

Payment & Invoicing
Lessons are billed monthly in advance. You’ll receive an invoice at the start of each month (based on the number of weeks that month). Payments can be made via bank transfer or cash — easy and straightforward.

Progress-Focused
I keep track of your development week to week so we’re not just guessing where you’re at. Whether you want to play around a campfire or write your own music, I’ll help you build a clear and achievable path to get there.

FAQ
Do I need to know how to read music?
Not at all — we’ll work with whatever method makes sense for you, whether that’s tabs, playing by ear, or visual patterns.

What if I don’t know what kind of music I like yet?
That’s totally fine — we’ll explore different styles until something clicks.

What age can kids start lessons?
Around 7 is ideal, but I’ve taught younger students too if they’re especially motivated — let’s have a chat and see what works.

Still Have Questions?
Reach out anytime — I’m happy to chat, answer your questions, and help you figure out if this is the right fit for you (or your child). Let’s get you playing with confidence.
