I tackle material on the basis of topics for eg: mind-body problem; free will VS determinism; personal identity. As well as religious and ethical philosophy: the problem of evil, kantian ethics, aristotelian ethics etc..
Tailoring my lessons to the topics you crucially must cover as well as pay careful attention to your weaker areas. I believe that one of the best ways for a student to familiarise themselves with a new philosophy is through thought experiments as well as the technical explanations.
