About Tim

I have a rich academic background to bring to the table, with a BSc in Theoretical Physics (Dean's List Award, Graduating Top 10) and an MSc in Quantum Dynamics (Graduating Top 10), both at Imperial College London. I am also the youngest lecturer of Physics (teaching Quantum Physics at master's level) at the University of Barcelona. I believe this gives me a great advantage to teach in a way that others will understand as I have recently had to study many of the topics I now lecture - I know which bits were hard, and what was hard about them because learning them is a recent memory for me. I've honed my teaching skills over 7 years of dedicated tutoring every week. During this time, I have taught (click "see more" to see the full list): - A-Levels: Over 1000 hours teaching maths, further maths, and physics with extensive experience in exam prep for various boards, and a 96% success rate for students getting their grades. I have also helped students with their personal development, career paths, and personal statements. - University entrance exams: Over 700 hours preparing students for the MAT, PAT, TMUA, STEP II, and STEP III papers. - Undergraduate and Masters: Over 1500 hours of teaching physics and mathematics covering elementary undergraduate topics like vector calculus, real and complex analysis, differential equations, linear algebra and tensors, to electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and more advanced topics like quantum field theory, group theory, differential geometry, condensed matter etc. My mission is to transform seemingly complex topics into accessible knowledge, ensuring that you not only grasp the content but also develop a profound appreciation for what is a beautiful and elegant subject. There's nothing more rewarding than witnessing the moment when understanding clicks, the proverbial penny drops, or that sought-after lightbulb moment occurs in STEM subjects. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a passion for problem-solving, I am eager to share the gift of maths and physics far and wide. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Quantum Sciences, I collaborate with leading players in the private sector of quantum technologies through a partnership with ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences. One day, I hope to be able to start my own Quantum Technology company, and this idea is the premise of my PhD! I regularly attend and present my work at top conferences internationally, and am currently guest-lecturer for a quantum physics course for Master's students in the University of Barcelona. I am a dual national (English/French) based in and around London, enjoying both the outdoors and music. Alongside my scientific pursuits, I am an avid musician and composer, actively participating in the UK YMSO and having been an alumnus of the University of London Symphony Orchestra (ULSO).

My teaching style is all about two things: expressing ideas and concepts through mathematics (i.e. maths as a tool and not the central object of study), and focus on the fundamentals. All of quantum physics is governed by a small set of concepts known as the Five Postulates. Understanding their deep connections will enable you to form a web of knowledge which is clear and consistent. Having that intuitive "gut feeling" through the Five Postulates is a great way to connect a wide range of topics under a unified conceptual framework. Together, we can develop and consolidate these core concepts (also in Dirac notation!) with problem solving, derivations, and practical applications. As a young lecturer in quantum physics, I am in touch with which parts students have struggled because I have recent memory of what it was like to encounter this material for the first time. The aim of my lessons is to make you proficient and independent when tackling problems, to the point where you are eventually able to learn independently. Click "see more" so see how I do this in three steps... Three Steps for Success in Quantum 1) Understand the Five Postulates - and I mean _really_ understand them. Not just how to execute their ideas, but to understand their implications for the laws that govern our world. 2) Use physical intuition and the Five Postulates to derive key results - once we have a good foundation, we can derive almost anything with our newly acquired tools, from introductory topics like the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, Ehrenfest's Theorem, and Angular Momentum, to more niche results like the Optical Bloch Equations, Choi Matrices, and more! 3) Connect problems and more advanced concepts explicitly to the postulates - here we work through important problems for any young quantum physicist's development, connecting our route to a solution back to our foundations. I have read and solved most of the problems in key influential literature in physics like Griffiths, Sakurai, Nielsen and Chuang, Schleich, and others. As such I have a curated list of good places to find problems that are adapted to your current level of understanding. Below is a detailed breakdown of taught topics - I also have loads of great insights, tips and tricks for mastering your courses, lab reports, thesis and applications for PhD places through a wide network of collaborators in the UK and EU. Our sessions can be supplemented by key mathematical tools and concepts to allow us to better communicate the behaviour of this strange and fascinating model of reality (do check out my maths ad!). One thing that really revolutionised my perspective was using group theory in order to back out results and calculations - I love to share hacks like these with others!
