About Richard
Qualified, experienced teacher and ex-chemical engineer. I am a high school science teacher, and have been for the last 4.5 years. Before this, I had many years of industrial experience. Chemical engineering industrial skills include: mathematical modelling, budget planning, project management, design, and coordination of a team of engineers to deliver global, lab-scale automated equipment. I have a focus on recall, pedagogy and metacognition (remembering concepts long term, learning techniques and helping students to understand and consider how they are learning). My teaching style is based around making concepts more accessible. By relating scientific and mathematical principles to everyday life, it makes them more relevant to learners. I use a procedure-based approach towards concepts, allowing students to use step-by-step processes, allowing learners to access much more material, which in turn gives them a framework to follow, allowing them to come to terms with material that otherwise may have seemed too difficult. As a result, students can interact with the learning and be able to do the practice that leads to deeper understanding. Lessons are focused around learning and getting students to interact with the work in various ways to ensure understanding and long-term retention of information, with looped recall interleaved into lessons and study. I have taught both Edexcel and AQA science along with Edexcel maths. I am currently teaching Edexcel science full time.
