About Miguel
I am Portuguese, 42 years old and I hold a degree in Business Management from ISCTE Business School, Lisbon.
I trained to teach in the UK. I've taught in Kent, Hertfordshire and at international schools in Portugal and China. My teaching qualification is a PGCE in Mathematics Secondary from the University of Brighton.
I love History (especially eye witness accounts from awesome events), literature and making music.

I am an experienced teacher and tutor so I am well able to adapt the lessons to my students' needs and to exam requirements.
My experience also allows me to anticipate obstacles and misconceptions. I prepare for them in advance.
As a teacher/tutor, my lesson planning has three pillars:
Memory - each lesson connects to previous ones and builds on them; this is important because it reinforces and consolidates learning. Independent lessons are easier to teach but they are also easy to forget.
Problem-solving - good problem-solving skills are a result of good communication skills (understanding the question, identifying key elements, drawing the problem, laying out the obstacles, knowing the purpose). This will be our focus.
Questioning - Tutoring allows for working on individual needs and focus on developing good habits. I constantly question the student so that they learn to question the problem - they learn with me how to approach a task by themselves. Good questioning leads to good thinking which, in turn, leads to becoming autonomous.
This may seem very serious but it is done with a light heart. The benefits can be remarkable: an end to anxiety, a boost in confidence, acquisition of good learning habits and, of course, actually learning Maths.
