About Roddy
After teaching for a few years, I spent 17 years in the investment industry, gaining invaluable practical and technical expertise, to support my academic subject knowledge and teaching experience. Following a degree in Psychology and Business Studies, I have continued to read extensively in philosophy, psychology, politics and economics. This has given me excellent critical thinking skills and inspiration for thinking about and communicating academic concepts in creative ways. These are skills and knowledge I feel confident I can share with students, encouraging intellectual curiosity, problem solving, ethical reasoning and lifelong learning. I am also fascinated by how science and technology are changing education, jobs and the economy. I believe open and honest debate about responsible use of AI in learning, assessment and in the workplace, will be critical in guiding students in a rapidly changing world.

I qualified as an economics and business studies teacher in 2005, through the Teach First Programme, where I taught at Capital City Academy in London and served as Deputy Head of Sixth Form. I then spent 17 years in the investment industry, gaining invaluable practical and technical expertise, to support my academic subject knowledge and teaching experience. In teaching business and economics, I strongly believe in the importance of making every academic principle relevant or relatable to something in the student’s lives. Using a variety of teaching methods including role play, debate, multi-media and cross-curricular approaches, is essential to student engagement and learning. For certain students, a workshop I arranged led by management consultants from Accenture, effectively connected the dots on how analysis of business processes and strategy applied in the real world and was inspirational for one of the students who successfully pursued this as a career path. For others, a trip to a local factory making Jamaican patties, provided a relevant and tangible example we could refer to on many subtopics, and provided a positive illustration of local entrepreneurship. I would love to utilise the broad professional network I have built in my investment career, to introduce students to a multitude of business types and career paths. Following university, I have continued to read extensively in philosophy, psychology, politics and economics. This has given me much improved critical thinking skills and inspiration for thinking about and communicating academic concepts in creative ways.

Perfect! Roddy is very knowledgeable about the course and we are looking forward to intensifying my child's GCSE prep for business studies.
Perfect! My son had his first A level session and feels he has already been given really useful revision tips and ways of working which he hasn’t been given at school. We are going to book more!
