About Alissa
As a first-generation college student, I was clueless about what I wanted to pursue and was unfamiliar with what an undergraduate education entailed. I rapidly developed an anxiety disorder, and determined to do well, I attempted to ignore my uncanny fears. But the more I shrugged them off, the more they grew. I finally opened up to my advisor about how I was feeling, and she encouraged and empowered me. I felt like my struggle was validated, the unexplainable sense of panic ceased, and I no longer froze with fear. I recognized that seeking out resources and letting those who care about you know when you are discouraged can be the key to overcoming obstacles. This journey is what inspired my curiosity into the field of student affairs in Higher Education. I began to feel incredibly passionate about one day helping college students achieve their highest educational and professional goals.
At Bradley University, I was hired as a Student Aide for the Office of Orientation and Transfer Student Assistance. This position not only strengthened my skills and fostered my self confidence, but it gave me a sense of purpose. I never thought one internship could change the way I viewed myself and the world. My priorities altered, and I fully grasped the concepts in my classes as I related them to my experiences as a Student Aide. I began striving to learn as much as possible about effective management and leadership. The two-year long internship was extremely versatile, which gave me an understanding into the entire Student Affairs department. This is what truly solidified my enthusiasm for a career in Student Affairs.
This fall, I will pursue a Master's degree in College Student Affairs within the Counseling and Higher Education department at Eastern Illinois University. I will serve as a Graduate Assistant in Career Service where I’ll have the opportunity to support students on their career development journey. Additionally, I will lend a helping hand in the Vice President of Student Affairs office.
