About Jayne
Hi there,
I'm Jayne and writing is my passion. Writing in all forms- essays, poems, short stories... the list goes on.
There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone on their journey to written expression - be it academic or otherwise!
My background in teaching English goes back to my own exam days- being academically able, I found myself organising study groups for other students, excited to share insights and ideas about literature's greatest artists- Shakespeare, Plath, Hardy, Poe!
My study of literature continued to my A-level studies, where I gained great enthusiasm for critical analysis. Whilst studying texts such as "Othello", "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" and "Death of a Salesman", I created a signature critical writing style that led to the creation of a formula for tackling different types of academic questions. It is this experience that I believe can be taught and applied to any individual and their academic tasks at hand.
Whilst studying, I also have a great passion for poetry. Over the years, I compiled a collection of poetry and self published my first book "Melancholic serenades and Adolescent Anthems" when I was 19. Currently, I am editing my second collection of short stories and poems called "Hemlock Musings", which is set to be published in April 2021.
My current dedication to the study and creation of literature means my own insight into English and its affiliating subjects is constantly growing. This ever-growing knowledge I endeavour to give to my students, in efforts to share thoughts and opinions that will inevitably create a rich balance of views in my student's work.
My current tutoring outside of peer-tutoring at university consists of relatives and family friends, many of whom once struggled navigating academics alone. I like to think that I help my students to find their feet, offering a friendly face , a listening ear and an empathetic approach to their academic journey.

My teaching methodology at its core is simple- it has three components.
1) To collate thoughts- I first ask the student open questions about their understanding of the work at hand. That way, together we can establish a baseline of the student's existing knowledge so I can identify in what areas I can either improve or enhance their knowledge. It is also important at this stage to identify the student's greatest anxieties or anticipations with their studies. As such, as a tutor I can combine my ability to teach with my counselling experience- ensuring that the student feels relaxed and optimistic about their abilities.
2) To construct a clear path- I work with my students to find out what their preferred method of study is. I then cooperate this with my own tools such as presentations, worksheets and mini-quizzes that I tailor to each individual student.
3) To reflect- I believe the most key element of learning is the process of reflection. I feel that students who are prompted to reflect on their process are more likely to have a level of confidence that reflects their abilities. There is no greater joy than seeing a student proud of themselves and their own progress. Reflection is not just an academic skill- I believe the identification of key strengths and weaknesses in our approach to challenges is an imperative skill of any progressive, empathetic individual, one that is beneficial to learn in adolescence as it can be applied to academia and beyond!
