About Greta

I have been writing papers for university in subjects including Law, Social Sciences, and Humanities. I tutored students in languages, helped with study methods, and I've been quite the critic for proofreading essays (I tend to be nice in the comments, although I can be perfectionistic at times). I always enjoyed teaching, whether it was for my cousin struggling with English classes or helping students throughout middle school and high school. It was fulfilling to see the results they achieved, and to know that part of it was just me guiding them and making them feel confident in their own ideas.
I studied tourism in high school (Italy) and then moved to England for my undergraduate studies in International Relations and Diplomacy, ending up in Edinburgh for my Master's in Criminology and International Security. I have been working in an international summer school in the UK every summer since I graduated, while working as a personal assistant from Italy the rest of the year. I keep teaching as a part-time hobby when I have free time available, and I would like to remain in the academic field in the future, possibly continuing learning and (maybe) research. This will all depend on my future self and her decisions. We will see.
I am meeting a lot of smart and interesting students of all ages, from whom I learn a lot (even more than I teach them, the majority of the time), about life too! I opened this profile saying about myself that sometimes I thought of I wanted to keep pursuing the path I chose, but at the same time I wanted to work for Vogue and National Geographic, as well as going straight for plan B: a nice farm near a beach in Liguria. Overall, I am decisive, sometimes. (Unfortunately for my savings,) I am now planning a completely different path, which will be an interesting adventure to add to this introduction of me in the future! If it goes through :)
What I do have for sure right now is a wide range of good examples to help understand concepts, and I'm not bad at tutoring!

After my years at university (in the UK), I continued proofreading for some students (PhDs and Undergraduates/Master's), both in the UK and other English-taught universities (eg, VET school in Hungary, proofreading dissertations).

What 'proofreading' can I offer?
I do not touch the body of the work; I add comments.
Comments include corrections or ideas for improvement on clarity, grammar and punctuation checks, style, small editing tips and bibliography. I usually add personalised comments to explain the reasons why and how I would change a given sentence or paragraph, for you to have a choice. I say this every time: take what resonates, and leave the rest. You might not agree with some of my corrections, and that is completely understandable! Everyone has their own writing style, and some corrections might take that personalisation away. A shame, if you ask me, because each writing style is interesting and unique as it is and should not be altered (unless it includes big mistakes, in that case, keep it unique but include some changes in the process), which is why I always specify that each correction is up to you to include or ignore. No hard feelings.

Videocall is available but not necessary. If you would like to have a short discussion regarding your ideas beforehand, I remain available via email too. What I will ask in general is an MS Word copy of your work through email, and I will do my best to send it back with feedback within 48/72 hours (this will depend on the length of the document and the period of the year, which might also require less time than what is given). If needed, I remain available when the job is done to answer any questions!

I also offer Bibliography-only revisions, where I double check the academic style is followed correctly and coherently throughout the list. Here too, I do not touch the work itself. I leave comments. I tend to take referencing seriously; a coherent referencing style, alongside a well-edited page, always does the trick for the eyes, so I think it is important (even though none actually ever looks at it).

In my experience, proofreading can by itself help your work reach a decent result; the rest is up to what you say in your paper and how you make your arguments work (so, are they supported clearly and enough? are the sources reliable?). Since I do not (unfortunately) know everything about every subject, I do my best to research as much as I can about the topic in question, but I still cannot offer you a reliable point of view. I will try to give my overall idea and perception of your work, but I will not try to change your arguments, nor will I explicitly say if something is not correct (unless I researched it and I feel like some questions about your arguments could help you think over it, and maybe give you another perspective to consider). If any question comes to me, I tend to ask (in a comment), and usually these questions are only for you to think over your ideas and maybe realise that something needs to be clarified (or else, you will realise I really do not know anything about the subject and the question will only result funny to you. Win win), but I will not impose myself over your work. As I said, your work has to be yours. So the ideas themselves will not be touched, but the form and the clarity I will highlight.

The price for proofreading goes by the word, it would be 0,020£ per word, so I will create a personalised package when contacted with the details.
