About Raf
I'm a Belgian-born drummer and composer based in New York City, active in both the jazz and avant-garde scene and the heavy music world.
I hold a Bachelor and Master of Music in Performing Arts and Composition from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, including an exchange year at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York — so my training spans both the European conservatory tradition and the NYC jazz scene.
Beyond teaching, I perform regularly in New York City across a wide range of musical contexts, which keeps my playing and musical thinking current and directly informs how I teach. I believe that a good drum teacher needs to be an active musician first.
I'm patient, structured, and genuinely passionate about the instrument and about helping people grow as musicians — whatever their background or goals.

I'm a professional drummer and composer based in Brooklyn, trained at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York.
I teach drums at all levels — complete beginners, intermediate players, and advanced musicians looking to refine their technique or expand their stylistic range.
My lessons combine structure with adaptability. I come prepared with a clear direction for each session, but I always adjust to where the student is and what they need that day.
The foundation of my teaching is solid technique — grip, posture, stroke control, coordination — taught not as an end in itself but in service of feel and musicality. I want my students to sound and feel like drummers, not just execute exercises.
A typical lesson might include a warm-up focused on a specific technical challenge, work on a groove or pattern tied to the student's musical interests, and some ear training or rhythmic reading depending on the level. For advanced students, we might dig into odd meters, independence, improvisation, or composition.
I'm patient, encouraging, and adapt my communication style to each person.
Whether you're an adult picking up the instrument for the first time or an experienced player hitting a plateau, I'll meet you where you are and build from there.
