About Melis

Melis Yesiller is a New York-based dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist whose work spans choreography, performance, and collaborative artistic direction. Recently, she served as Associate Choreographer and performer for Gethsemane, a project with Lindsey Dance Collective presented at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York. She also worked as Choreographer Assistant on The Staircase by Virginie Mecene for WESTFEST and performed with Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company at Untermyer Park and Gardens. Earlier in 2026, she performed in Ritual by Jonathan Royse Windham at Arts on Site.

As a teaching artist, Yesiller has worked with students in ballet, modern dance, and movement, bringing together her classical training and contemporary practice. Her teaching experience includes working with young dancers and developing movement practices that encourage both technical awareness and individual expression. She has also supported youth arts programming through her work at the Martha Graham School, where she assisted with the teen program and contributed to its day-to-day operations.

Her recent choreographic work includes The Curse, presented at Movement Research at the Judson Church, and Threads of the Wild, presented at the International Human Rights Art Festival at Court Square Theatre. Her earlier choreographic works include Nysa, Ünzile, Niobe, and Camélia, presented at the Martha Graham Studio Theater and the International Human Rights Art Festival.

Her performance repertory includes Martha Graham works such as Night Journey, Prelude to Action, Acts of Light, Primitive Mysteries, Heretic, and Appalachian Spring, as well as Dior’s Carousel of Dreams, choreographed by Virginie Mecene and Janet Eilber. Before establishing her career in New York, Yesiller performed professionally in Turkey with Mercan Selcuk Dance Company, Süreyya Opera, and Mersin State Opera and Ballet. Her classical and contemporary repertory includes Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Giselle, Esmeralda, Coppélia, Paquita, The Nutcracker, Bir, Babamın Şarkıları, Uyanış, West Side Story, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Piri Reis.

Yesiller holds a BFA from Istanbul University State Conservatory and completed the Composition program at the Martha Graham School. Her artistic practice brings together her background in classical ballet and modern dance with her developing work as a choreographer, performer, and teaching artist, with an interest in creating work that connects physical expression, storytelling, and human experience.

In my classes, students will explore the foundations of modern dance, contemporary dance, and ballet, focusing on building strength, flexibility, and creativity. Each session is thoughtfully designed to help dancers of all levels develop their technique and discover their unique artistic voice.

With over 15 years of teaching experience, I’ve had the privilege of working with students of all ages—from children to seniors—in both ballet and contemporary dance. My teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive and inspiring environment where dancers can refine their skills, express themselves, and reach their full potential.

Students will delve into expressive movement and grounded techniques through modern dance, inspired by the rich legacy of pioneers like Martha Graham. The contemporary dance portion will emphasize fluidity, improvisation, and emotional connection, while the ballet segment will focus on posture, alignment, and classical techniques essential for a strong technical foundation.

These lessons go beyond technique, encouraging confidence, artistry, and a deep connection to movement. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced dancer, these classes provide a welcoming space to grow and thrive in your dance journey.
