I specialize in English pronunciation and accent reduction. Using my background in phonetics we'll break down words into individual sounds and then later we'll build them back up as you master each sound. With detailed instruction and individualized feedback along the way we'll master even the toughest sounds! I've worked as a contractor for Accent Advisor, the biggest accent reduction company in the US. I have more than five years of experience helping students with their goals of speaking with more confidence and fluency!

While I specialize working with non-native English speakers, I also provide classes for actors learning regional dialects.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Although I could speak Spanish at a high level, whenever I listened to recordings of myself, I cringed. My accent sounded pretty decent in my head, but in reality it wasn't very good, haha! Not only did I want to sound better, but I also didn't want to have to repeat myself so much. I wanted to be understood the first time. And so I dove into the world of phonology and phonetics, correcting my accent little by little. I found the topic and process incredibly interesting and then not too long after, I got my first job as an accent coach.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I primarily work with non-native English speakers, helping them speak with a neutral American English accent. I also work with actors, both native and non native speakers, who need help with specific English dialects, such as Southern, Boston, NYC, etc.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My friend and former teacher who had her doctorate in Applied Linguistics inspired and encouraged me to get into the field of linguistics and become an accent coach!
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Tutors have the unique opportunity to work one on one with students, so creating custom plans and individualized lessons is key. I research each student's native language background to better understand what influences their accent and how I can help them.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my favorite moments was reviewing an early recording of a student's speech alongside her current, improved pronunciation. She couldn't believe the old recording was even her voice, it had changed that much!
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

In the early years of accent coaching, it felt like there was so much to learn, and each student brought a unique set of challenges. However, after working with hundreds of learners from diverse language backgrounds, I've become well equipped to handle a wide range of accents and have developed a clear understanding of which techniques are most effective.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love talking with students about words that can be "reduced" and the rhythm and intonation they need to sound more natural and fluid. To me, this is really the secret sauce of sounding like a native speaker!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

While I bring a lot of experience and expertise as an accent coach, what sets me apart is my dedication to helping students achieve their goals. I always have their interests at heart and keep it real with them. I take pride in their success because it means I've supported them well!
