About Linda
Innovative thinker and energetic teacher with strengths in academic English, ESL strategies for second-language learners, reading strategies for struggling readers, along with great affection for gifted and talented students as well as twice-exceptional students. I love English grammar, vocabulary comprehension, poetry, literature, composition. When not reading or writing, I can usually be found in the art museum, antique store, the garden, library, traveling, running, hiking, or speaking Italian, and when I don't have the opportunity to travel, I find an occasional gelato to be a satisfactory substitution.

I have an MFA in poetry, a BFA in English, and a CELTA certificate, along with teaching endorsements in English, ESL, and GT (gifted and talented). I taught English Literature and Language to 7,8, and 9th graders for 10 years, ESL for several years, including several years of work with international students. I also worked for many years doing independent contractor work for hospitals and workplaces as an ESL instructor as well as work for the Utah Arts Council as a poet-in-the-schools in Nevada, Idaho, and Utah, including stints in one-room schoolhouses and extended poetry residencies on the Navajo reservation.
My teaching style is energetic, positive, and thoughtful. I use short skill lessons, modeling, and offer sheltered instruction when introducing new material in order to give students the confidence and hands-on experience to do independent work.
Being a tutor for individual students is rewarding work. My fondest memories involve smiles, fist pumps, and tears of relief when students finally succeed at tasks they never dreamed possible. In my years of experience as a student, tutor, and teacher, I have found that much of effective teaching involves assessing students' needs; evaluating different learning styles and preferences; finding out where students are academically and emotionally; helping them recognize their inherent strengths; and finding and utilizing tools to showcase those strengths and build up any areas that are troublesome.

I had her ESL classes from the high school in the year of 2009. I still remember the ways she taught the classes are very enjoyable, fun, and creative. The classes are always lively and filled with excitement to learn from her. She does show care to her students because she would take her break time to work one on one with the student that has trouble. She is open and patience that allows me to be comfortable to her to ask for help. I admired her as a great teacher, a kind person, and a sweetheart wherever she goes. It's 2018 now, yet she still is a great person I have ever meet. Thank you, Mrs. Nowlin Linda, for being a great and kind person you are as always.
Linda taught in my school district and participated in a secondary reading initiative that I was in charge of. I had the opportunity to do classroom observations many times and was always impressed by her caring nature, her creativity, and her desire to meet her students’ needs. She is a wonderful person and committed teacher.
Miss Nowlin has always been a great educator due to her willingness to be on the same page as you and work with who you are and not just as another student in her class. It’s easy to have her stand out compared to other teachers due to her selflessness and dedication to your growth. She stayed after hours countless times to offer a more intuitive experience for all her pupils and gave many unorthodox choices to learn if you weren’t a fan of the standard cirriculum. I took a few classes from her going through middle school and high school and through that experience I know she is a very hard worker and definitely pushes her students to be the best they can be.
