Find out more about Esteban Tamashiro

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

My musical journey started when I was around 6 years old. My grandfather used to play an old piano at home, and I was fascinated by its sound. He began teaching me pieces by ear. Since he was a big Tango fan, my very first melodies were beautiful old tangos. That experience shaped my love for music and for the piano, which has been my main instrument ever since.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I listen to many genres, but I have a particular love for classical music, jazz, and soundtracks. I’m always fascinated by the structural brilliance and depth of Johann Sebastian Bach. However, I truly believe that any great music — regardless of genre — can teach you something new.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

One of the most challenging experiences is preparing piano students for Grade 8 exams. I’ve worked with students who had previous lessons but lacked strong foundations in theory or technique. Catching up on those gaps while studying more advanced repertoire can be demanding, but also very rewarding.

I also teach composition. My students don’t just learn theory — they learn the entire process of transforming an idea into a complete and polished musical work.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I wouldn’t dare give a definitive answer since my formal training is in piano. While I can play some guitar and Japanese instruments, piano is the instrument I truly know in depth. If I had to mention one, I would say the violin, due to its technical difficulty at a beginner level and the precision required to produce a beautiful tone.
  • What are your keys to success?

    Curiosity → Clarity → Goals → Motivation → Consistency

    Curiosity leads to understanding.
    Clarity creates direction.
    Clear goals build motivation.
    And consistency makes progress inevitable.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would love to meet Claude Debussy, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Hiromi Uehara.

Debussy for his sense of colour and harmony, Sakamoto for his ability to bridge classical and modern sound worlds, and Hiromi for her energy, creativity, and genre-blending virtuosity. That would be an unforgettable conversation.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

When I finished school and decided to pursue music professionally, I discovered that although my piano level was strong, my theory and ear training were very weak. During the entrance course for music college, I scored very high in piano but only 1/10 in aural skills. I was devastated.

Instead of giving up, I studied harder than ever for one month and passed the final aural exam with a 6/10. From that moment on, every academic year improved. After graduating, I was fortunate to receive a scholarship to one of the top conservatories in Spain. That experience taught me that effort and consistency can completely change your path.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

My main priority is that students feel comfortable and enjoy the process. I believe gradual, well-structured steps are far more effective in the long term. When students enjoy what they are doing, progress becomes natural, sustainable, and meaningful.
