About Catriona
I am an Edinburgh-based student, currently studying for a PhD in heritage and tourism with the University of Central Lancashire. Previously I am a double graduate of the University of Edinburgh, with a BA in Humanities and Social Sciences and an MSc in Japanese Society and Culture from the University of Edinburgh. I also have an MA from University College London in Cultural Heritage Studies. I have a proven track record of strong academic achievement, and I greatly enjoy helping people reach their full potential in the subjects I know best. I offer guidance including essay planning and structuring; for university students in particular I offer advice on how to read academic writing and find good resources. I have worked with students of all levels, and I enjoy finding a way to personalise the learning journey for each one.

I’m kind, easy-going and sympathetic as well as reliable, punctual and thorough. My specialities are English, philosophy, media studies and history, subjects I have always excelled at and can explain thoroughly and with enthusiasm. My teaching methods are based around breaking information down into manageable and memorable chunks; and in reading examiner questions and model answers to create a step-by-step guide to answering a question. In this way I hope to make learning topics that involve analysis, critical thinking and essay writing easier for pupils who struggle with subjects where there can be more than one right answer. I also have a firm “don’t panic” policy, which has helped me, my friends and pupils through difficult exam times, and I always stress the importance of healthy study habits.
