About Jacob
I am a PhD-qualified sociologist with extensive experience teaching and tutoring students in the UK and internationally.
My doctorate in Sociology focused on mixed-race identity and identity formation, and my wider academic interests include race and ethnicity, inequality, education, youth, identity and social policy. I also hold an MSc in International Politics and a BA in Politics with Philosophy.
Alongside my current online tutoring, I have taught in secondary and sixth-form settings and have lectured at Goldsmiths, University of London and London Metropolitan University. I have also worked in research and public policy, particularly around race, education and social inequality.
I enjoy working with students who understand a subject but need help turning their ideas into a clear academic argument. My style is calm, conversational and challenging, and my aim is always to help students become increasingly confident and independent.

My lessons are built around what the student actually needs to improve. For A-Level students, this often means combining subject knowledge with exam technique: breaking down questions, planning essays, developing analysis and evaluation, using evidence effectively and reaching a clear judgement.
I use questioning throughout lessons rather than simply lecturing. Students are encouraged to explain ideas, challenge arguments and apply sociological theories to real examples. We regularly work with past-paper questions, mark schemes and model answers so that students understand exactly what stronger responses look like.
For university students, I can support essay planning, critical analysis, research methods, literature reviews and dissertation development while maintaining academic integrity.
Lessons are normally one hour and are suitable for A-Level, undergraduate and postgraduate Sociology students.
