About Chloë
Dr. Chloë Sobek is an educator and musician based between Melbourne and Berlin. She has over 20 years of teaching experience across school and university settings., as well as private lessons. She holds a PhD in Music from Monash University and has developed her love of music through her extensive musical background, spanning classical training, improvisation, composition, contemporary music and creative performance practice.
Chloë began studying piano and double bass from a young age as a full scholarship student at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, before completing a Bachelor of Music Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts and further study at the Australian National Academy of Music, the country’s most prestigious musical institution. Her musical training has given her a strong foundation in technique, reading, rhythm, listening, interpretation and general musicianship.
As a piano teacher, Chloë offers warm, supportive and personalized lessons for beginner to intermediate students, school-aged learners and adult beginners. She can help students build confidence at the keyboard, develop healthy technique, improve music reading, understand rhythm and theory, explore repertoire, and importantly, enjoy making music in a relaxed and encouraging environment.

My teaching style is patient, flexible and student-centered. I aim to help each student build a strong musical foundation while developing curiosity, independence and confidence in their own musical voice. I am attuned to the individual’s specific musical interests and goals, whether they are aiming for rigorous, high level performance or a more relaxed competence for their own enjoyment. Music is for everyone.
I work with students at many different stages of development, to build confidence, improve their technique, prepare for exams, or develop a more creative relationship with piano technique, reading music, rhythm, coordination, repertoire, practice strategies, music theory, improvisation, creativity, confidence building and general musicianship.
I prepare for lessons by reviewing the previous sessions with the particular student, and planning possible next steps. Each lesson begins with a quick conversation about between-lesson practice, questions, problems encountered and a positive acknowledgement of progress. Specific goals for the lesson are established together. Lessons might involve modelling, listening to specific exemplars, students playing specific passages or entire pieces, feedback and discussion. Students are encouraged to ask questions, to express their musical ideas and to feel comfortable challenging practices they do not understand. Lessons walk the line between ensuring the student feels confident and can experience success with a degree of challenge and expansion of the musical horizons of repertoire and skills. I encourage musicality, supporting students to see music as a creative endeavor, rather than just an exercise in technical accuracy.
I support piano students with musical understanding, listening skills, rhythm, reading, interpretation, creativity and confidence. I am especially interested in helping students develop a strong foundation in music while keeping lessons engaging, supportive and personally meaningful. My university teaching experience has allowed me to support students working across a wide range of musical approaches, from traditional instrumental development to experimental composition, electronic music, improvisation and interdisciplinary creative practice.

I was incredibly lucky to have Chloë as my mentor during my last year studying Composition and Music Technology at university. Chloë created a comfortable space where I could bring my half baked ideas (or, lack thereof) that, with her mentorship, grew into my best works to date; music I feel proud of! Chloë would direct my learning by finding specific musical techniques and research, breaking down these ideas to my level of understanding and finding helpful connections between these techniques and my own aspirations. Chloë would demonstrate how I could apply these methods to accomplish and/or strengthen my ideas, and would be receptive to my thoughts - allowing me to always feel heard and valued. Chloë would also guide my practice by challenging me to do my best work, including by providing feedback - which was consistently delivered in a respectful and constructive manner. As confirmed by my and my peers experiences, Chloë curated engaging lessons that benefited the individuals' learning intentions and musical goals - whilst allowing us all to feel supported along the way. This made Chloë an exceptionally adaptable teacher who was able to build rapport with students across the board - as she showed excellence in varied scenarios. Even those of us with the weirdest ideas turned in high quality work that reflected personal artistic integrity - Chloë does not shy away from the unique, she manages to embrace this and make it amazing. I know many personally (including myself) who already miss having lessons with Chloë, and I would wholeheartedly recommend her, from beginners, to emerging artists and particularly to those looking to find and refine their sound!
Thank you so much Chloë - I wouldn't have survived my final year without you.Chloë is an inspiring educator. She approaches each and every session with the patience and open-mindedness necessary to explore and make sense of seemingly abstract concepts, while maintaining a structured process to ensure these concepts reach their desired, tangible manifestation. Her guidance has helped me restore the confidence and creative fortitude in my own endeavours.
Chloë helped me complete my final composition last year. I really enjoyed the lessons we had together as she is really knowledgable, patient, and encouraging when it comes to music theory and composition! Her teaching helped me improve my confidence, refine my music, and think about music in a much deeper way.
Chloë was one of the most important teachers I had during my undergraduate studies in composition and music technology. I studied with her for a couple years, including individual mentoring that culminated in my thesis.
What always stood out was how seriously and thoughtfully she engaged with any idea I brought to her. She created an incredibly collaborative learning environment where I genuinely felt she was on the student’s side creatively and intellectually. Her knowledge of experimental and electronic music is immense, but what made her teaching so valuable was her ability to make complex ideas feel clear and workable, in other words streamlining :) . Her feedback was always insightful, I would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone interested in composition, electronic music, or developing a stronger artistic practice.Chloë is a warm and encouraging teacher with extensive music experience across composition and improvisation. I learned so much from our lessons and found her teaching to be practical and engaging. Beyond that, Chloë helped me develop new confidence and skills, and I have enjoyed continuing to implement what I learned from her in my music practice. Highly recommend!
As the Principal of a senior college Chloë provided individual lessons for some of my students. She was absolutely reliable, took great pains to get to know the specific needs of each student and was genuinely interested in helping each one become confident and successful. Highly recommended!
