About Elara
I am a PhD graduate in Neuroscience specialising in cognitive and developmental neuroscience, with over 13 years of experience supporting students across a wide range of ages, academic levels and educational settings. Alongside my research background, I have extensive experience in teaching, tutoring, academic mentoring and educational programme development, including work with Oxford Summer Courses and students preparing for highly competitive universities.
My teaching draws on both my scientific expertise and my understanding of how students learn. I specialise in making complex ideas in neuroscience, psychology, biology and related subjects clear, structured and engaging, while helping students develop the confidence to think independently rather than simply memorise information. I adapt my approach to each student, whether they are working towards GCSEs or A Levels, preparing for university examinations, developing a research project, or exploring a subject beyond the curriculum.
I also have substantial experience supporting students with the broader skills needed to succeed academically and at university. This includes research skills, scientific writing, essay structure, coursework, critical thinking, independent learning and developing academic interests into meaningful passion projects. I have worked with students from international backgrounds and supported them in developing the academic profile, intellectual curiosity and confidence needed to pursue high-achieving universities and competitive educational opportunities.
My work as a neuroscientist also allows me to bring a particularly research-informed perspective to learning. My interests include cognitive development, learning, attention, memory, decision-making and the ways in which technology can influence cognition and education. I have undertaken extensive work exploring AI overreliance and cognitive resilience, including how students can use AI as a tool for learning without allowing it to replace independent reasoning, problem-solving and critical thinking.
Whether a student needs help understanding a difficult scientific concept, preparing for an examination, developing a research project, strengthening their academic writing, or simply becoming a more confident and independent thinker, I aim to create a calm, supportive environment where they can ask questions, make mistakes and genuinely engage with the material.

My lessons combine subject expertise with a research informed understanding of how students learn, think and develop.
Rather than focusing solely on helping students arrive at the correct answer, I am interested in helping them develop the cognitive skills that allow them to work things out independently. My teaching therefore incorporates cognitive growth and executive functioning skills such as working memory, attention, planning, organisation, cognitive flexibility, reasoning, problem solving and metacognition. I help students learn how to break complex information into manageable parts, identify what is important, organise their thoughts and choose effective strategies for approaching unfamiliar problems.
For students studying neuroscience, psychology, biology and related subjects, I can support everything from GCSE and A Level content through to university level study and independent research. Lessons can include explaining difficult concepts, exam preparation, essay writing, scientific reasoning, coursework, research skills and developing academic projects or areas of personal interest.
I also work with students who want to go beyond the curriculum. Through my experience with Oxford Summer Courses and supporting students from international backgrounds, I have helped learners explore their interests, develop passion projects and build the academic independence and intellectual curiosity needed for competitive university environments.
An important part of my approach is helping students develop a healthy relationship with technology and AI. My neuroscience work has included exploring AI overreliance, cognitive resilience and the potential impact of AI on independent reasoning. I therefore encourage students to use AI thoughtfully as a learning tool, while continuing to practise the skills that should remain their own: questioning, reasoning, remembering, problem solving and making judgements.
Every lesson is adapted to the individual student. Some may need help understanding a difficult concept; others may need support with organisation, working memory, confidence or approaching complex information without becoming overwhelmed. My aim is to identify what is getting in the way of learning and give each student practical strategies they can continue using independently, both inside and outside the classroom.

Elara has been teaching me from undergrad university and now for master's in neuroscience (but also taking other modules). It's been an absolute pleasure!
She's very patient, adapts and explains things from the core. Appreciate how she adapts her teaching style.
