About Hugh

I am an extremely enthusiastic individual who aims to motivate my students and to build up their confidence. My main aim in teaching is to make it so that my students develop the skills necessary for learning throughout life and not just learn the subject content.

I have prepared and taught curriculums for a range of subjects up to and including GCSE level history. All of which have prompted students to work to levels above what their chronological age dictates. I am firm believer that anyone can learn anything with the right guidance.

Whilst teaching I have also tutored multiple students with the same methodology and have helped year 6 students work towards year 8 levels.

Alongside this, I have also mentored students with various different needs to help them adapt to both their school and personal lives in order to garner the best possible results for them.

I am a PGCE qualified, experienced teacher who has worked at both state and independent schools in London for the past 6 years: delivering full curriculums to students aged 7-16, as both a teacher and tutor. After nearly a decade of working with young people (including as a mentor prior to teaching), I have found that in order to get the best out of them, you need to give young people the best of you. This is something that I achieve by building strong rapports with all of my students, getting to know them as an individual, and by making sure that all of my lessons are fun: featuring their own interests where I can. I do this based on my belief that any student learns better when they feel that their teacher/ tutor is genuinely there to help them and wants the best for them.

I have developed a style which promotes a positive attitude towards learning and helps my students achieve beyond expectations. This is built on mutual respect and the idea that what you learn should not be dictated by your age. Instead, I strive to push students to achieve beyond what they think is possible by breaking a subject down, so that they understand it, and then building it beyond their expected capabilities. This has led to me teaching curriculums which often include materials which are expected to suit students who are up to 3 years older than my own.

However, I am aware that every student learns at their own pace and do not set unrealistic expectations of my students. Therefore, I prepare ability appropriate tasks for each student and engage in constant discussion with them, so that I can assess and alter plans for them as necessary. I also have experience working with students who have various SEND requirements, as well as students who may have different emotional needs.

I have a strong subject knowledge which covers all of the primary curriculum and extends to 11+ and KS3 mathematics, as well as GCSE History. I am also a fully qualified TEFL and TESOL teacher, as well as being able to tutor in Psychology and Sociology based on my own studies (Sociology and Criminology BSc hons and an ongoing MSc Psychology).

Please feel free to message me if you need any further information, or to enquire about specific students or subjects.
