About Aurélien

Hello there!

I am Aurelien, a cellist and teacher with over 10 years of teaching experience.

I am passionate about passing on my love for music and cello playing, and teaching is at the very heart of my instrumental practice.

Over the last couple of years, I have taught privately, in music schools, conservatoires and summer music courses, to a wide range of profiles, from complete beginners to college students, of all ages. Although constantly evolving, my teaching methods are based upon one simple principle: prioritising the needs of the students and the pleasure they must draw from playing the instrument. Over the years I’ve been putting a strong emphasis on the acquisition of music as a language and means of expression, so that it creates lifelong, durable knowledge. I adapt my methods to each particular profile/student to transform the learning process into an organic and enjoyable journey, and rigorously analyse my students strengths and weaknesses in order to further develop the strengths and focus on alleviate weaknesses. My teaching brings together the excellence and reputation of the most renowned French and English schools, and passes on a long, established tradition of music making.

Many of my students have successfully auditioned for conservatoires and passed their exams with flying colours. But most importantly, I am a positive and joyful person, and value the pleasure of learning and making music above all, so that the lesson is always an enjoyable time for everyone!

My lessons always take place in a friendly, supportive environment.
I adapt my methodology to the specific needs of my students and give them the tools to improve with confidence and musical awareness!

For the youngest in particular, but also for the most experienced, my pedagogy is based on learning through experimentation, research and active listening, in order to allow my students to find by themselves the solutions to the various difficulties that arise from playing the cello.

I am familiar with many different methods and pedagogies and use each one according to the situation. In my approach, music and technique always go hand in hand, the ultimate goal being to encourage expression through the instrument.

I believe in teaching in a way that encourages exchange between student and teacher and never try to impose a rigid method on my students. Although serious and demanding, I adapt to the pace of each student.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

My first encounter with the cello was when I was 5 years old. My mother used to play me a CD of Bach's cello suites, and that's how I started playing the cello. I guess I fell in love with that low, dark and mellow voice… Later on, my first experience in a symphony orchestra was the thing that decided me to become a professional musician. It was the fascinating teachers I met along the way that pushed me to teach, and I owe them a lot for that.
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I often listen to pieces over and over again but for short periods of time. I like to change often and discover new works. If there are any I always come back to, it's the Bach Suites and Schubert's Lieder in classical, Ruben Gonzalez's piano and the wonderful voices of Stacey Kent and Ella Fitzgerald in jazz. I never get bored with them!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Learning music is such a personal thing. What is very complex for some is obvious for others. But I guess if I were to give something incredibly difficult to work on, it would be a contemporary work, like Ligeti or Boulez. That can drive any musician crazy! Or some Indian polyrhythms, that could be fun.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Again, it depends on the person learning. I have seen students learn instruments with amazing speed despite their difficulty while struggling with 'easier' instruments. It's all a question of sensitivity... If you love the voice of an instrument and are passionate about it, that already makes it easier! For me, the piano is incredibly difficult - you can learn how to play easy things quickly, but to master is a different kind of challenge...
  • What are your keys to success?

A lot of passion, a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of hard work.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

One of them I have already met in this kind of context: Yo-Yo Ma. A man of genius and absolute kindness. One of the most inspiring and eclectic living artists.

Santiago Cañon-Valencia, one of the coolest musicians around. I would love to share a drink with him!

A bit anachronistic: Ruben Gonzalez, to ask him the secrets of his energy and zest of living! The sound of his piano just makes me smile.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I teach in this summer course every year, to about 15 teenagers. They are so funny, you are never short of anecdotes with them. But just to see them playing together on stage, making music and sharing it with their audience is one of the most beautiful things I've experienced in my job...
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I think I simply am a teacher who is passionate about his job. I am patient, positive and honest with my students. Learning how to play an instrument can take a lifetime, and I strive to make the process as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.
