About Lane

I am 23 years old, and a new grad of 2022. I graduated from East Tennessee State University with a degree in communication and a minor in clinical exercise science. I have been an elite athlete for many years and followed my dream to play a division 1 sport in college. I grew up with a learning disability called dyslexia. After 7 years of dyslexia remediation and learning the best ways to discuss my learning disability and needs with teachers; I successfully completed 4 years of university education along with a full-time athletic schedule. This was no easy feat. I would not have been successful in school if my mother had not gotten an early dyslexia diagnosis and worked to support me emotionally and physically through many years of hybrid education leading up to college. I hope to advocate for others and inspire them to treat their dyslexia as a gift, a different way of thinking, and a limitless opportunity to see things differently.

About the lesson

My approach as a tutor comes from a place of past experience. Growing up with a learning disability called dyslexia, I was always made to feel different in a negative way. I was oftentimes berated by teachers for not catching on fast enough. Fast-forward through my college education; I started working with my professors on a more personal level and completely stopped utilizing my dyslexia accommodations due to more effective communication for my needs. I was successful in my collegiate career after struggling through most of my younger educational years. I aim to set a positive example for students who need self-advocacy skills for their own learning needs while assisting them in their English studies. I will take a remediated approach and help students re-learn fuzzy areas of education while also building new pathways for effective learning. My tutoring sessions will be most beneficial to those who are engaged and willing to try new techniques. I am especially proficient in working with students who are struggling with reading, writing, spelling. literacy, and who are currently utilizing an IEP through school.
