About Belinda

Hi there! I'm Belinda and I have 5 years of experience teaching English.

I initially set out to become a psychologist and to supplement my studies by combining my Bachelor of Psychology degree (from the University of Pretoria, South Africa) with a PGCE (through the University of South Africa), but when I found how much I love teaching, all thoughts of psychology whithered away. I am now in the process of acquiring my Masters in Education through the University of South Wales, and should be qualified by mid-2022.

I absolutely love sharing my love of language with students, be it visual literacy, poetry, language conventions, reading comprehension, and even novel and Shakespeare analysis. I want you to ace your exams, and get the highest possible score in English that you can.

I have taught in South Africa, Hong Kong, China, as well as online.

I know that with a little fun combined with a little hard work, we can achieve some truly outstanding grades!

There is nothing in the world I would rather do every day than spread my love of language to every child in the world. With complete honesty, if I could make just one child love English as much as I do, I could pass on knowing I have made a difference in the world that can never be erased.

When I first began teaching, I realised that classes were divided into top achievers, and a 'tail end', or those who need more support. I try to use various differentiation techniques, including catering for visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic learning styles. The endpoint is always the same - the content of the literature and its meaning must be understood: it's just a matter of how some children learn to understand and internalise the content.

I believe learning should be made more fun through innovation. One of my most innovative lessons was when I decided to act out Shakespeare as weird characters. For example, learners would act out the 'Balcony Scene' from Romeo and Juliet, but they would do so as if they were in a Bollywood film, or a spaghetti Western, or a soap opera, etcetera. I had used this technique a few times in the past, and it really puts the learners in stitches from laughing so much, but a few minutes of reflection after the scene would always take place to ensure the they understood the content, and there would usually be a class discussion of thematic content.

After five years of teaching English, I have come to understand that there are many different types of learners and learning styles. My main goal as a teacher is first, to ensure that my learners understand what they need to
understand according to the syllabus, and second, that they have as much fun as possible doing so.
