  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My fascination with mathematics, science and computing began early in life when I grew up in the UK. I earned a general scholarship at age 12 and a science scholarship at age 16 achieving top marks at GCSE and A Level before progressing to a First-Class Master’s in Engineering and Computer Science at Oxford University (3rd in the entire year and another scholarship).

Private tutoring started soon after university. I realised that my strongest academic skill — breaking down complex concepts into simple logical steps — was where students often struggled most. Over 25 years of working one-to-one I’ve refined a teaching approach that helps students think their way to solutions not just recall facts.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor Maths, Physics, Chemistry and IT/ICT from primary school through to degree level and entrance exams such as Oxbridge and GAMSAT.

I especially enjoy unlocking difficult logical problems — where a student is close to understanding something but just needs the right pathway illuminated, by helping them connect basics they are already aware of in their head. Topics involving real reasoning and the connections between concepts are particularly rewarding.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes — teachers who didn’t just tell me the answer but made me ask the right question first. That tutorial-style thinking from Oxbridge inspired my own method. It’s that “aha!” moment of true, deep, understanding — not just correct answers — that I bring into every session.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    A good tutor must combine:

    - Clarity of explanation

    - Patience to let students struggle constructively

    - Adaptability

    - Empathy

    - A deep command of fundamentals.

Tutoring isn’t just transferring knowledge; it’s guiding reasoning. My methodology deliberately helps students derive results themselves ensuring retention rather than memory.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my Oxford degree I was ranked third in my year and later awarded a scholarship that allowed me to spend a year in Japan teaching English while learning Japanese. This cross-cultural teaching experience — especially with students of widely varied backgrounds — reinforced the universal value of structured explanation and adaptable thinking.

That’s exactly the mindset I bring to one-to-one sessions now: helping each student work from what they know to what they need to understand.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

The real challenge isn’t the subject itself — it’s the gap between knowing and understanding. Many students arrive with anxiety about tests or experienced rote learning that doesn’t translate to problem solving or true understanding. Bridging that gap is precisely why I developed my Oxford tutorial-based approach.

From a business perspective the biggest ongoing challenge for independent tutors is ensuring students are aware of your services. That’s where platforms like SuperProf with their advanced search visibility and student request system have real practical value.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I’m passionate about reasoned thinking. I don’t just teach subjects — I teach methods of thought that empower students across disciplines: careful logic structured problem solving and analytical resilience.

That intellectual empowerment is what keeps me committed to tutoring after two decades - plus 3 decades of falling asleep at night reading Science articles!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

A Superprof isn’t just someone who knows their subject — they’re someone whose expertise matches students’ ambitions and unlocks their confidence.

    I bring:

    - Academic excellence backed by top qualifications

    - A refined method based on the Oxbridge tutorial tradition

    - Long term experience with diverse learners

    - A commitment to thinking over memorising

    - And results that show improved confidence and understanding.

At the same time using SuperProf gives tutors greater visibility, global reach and a professional structure for attracting the right learners — making it an excellent complement to an established private practice like mine.
