About Stephen
Hi I'm Stephen!
Fifteen years in the trenches of GCSE and KS3 English — helping the worried, the wonderful, and the wildly disorganised find their way to top grades, sharper thinking, and a quiet pride in what they can actually do.
Oxford-trained, First Class graduate, fully qualified teacher (QTS), DBS verified — and mildly obsessed with making English feel less like a mystery.
Alongside tutoring, I’m a dedicated creator of online educational YouTube videos and online study guides. Every strategy I teach is constantly refreshed through ongoing research, classroom testing, and improving how students think, plan, and perform.
I specialise in:
• Boosting Grade 4–5 students into Grade 7 and beyond
• Honing solid Grade 7s into dazzling Grade 8s and 9s
• Building esteem, confidence, and a genuine pride in writing
• Teaching the real skills behind learning: organising, planning, thinking ahead
• Breaking down “grey area” English into clear, beatable steps
Lessons are detailed, fast-moving, and always built around the student — no robotic textbook drills, no death-by-worksheet.
Instead: a sharp, evolving plan designed from diagnostic assessment, constantly adapted to sharpen strengths and close gaps.
Patience, high standards, and dry humour are guaranteed.
(I also believe progress and smiles aren’t mutually exclusive.)

This isn’t just English tutoring. It’s training for thinking, thriving and finally smiling at a blank page instead of panicking.
Over the years, I’ve helped hundreds of students tame the wilds of English:
- Three major texts and a poetry anthology (GCSE, Year 9–11)
- Analytical mastery across Poetry, Fiction, and Non-Fiction (75% of exam weight)
- Writing skills: creative, transactional, analytical — taught practically, not mystically
Students build a real set of notes and tools — not just decorate folders for OFSTED.
HOW WE BUILD SKILLS
- English success isn’t memory. It’s method.
- Your child will learn to:
- Hunt down the right quotations
- Read deeply, think sharply, and write fluently
- Analyse literary, structural, and poetic techniques without drowning in jargon
- Plan essays, craft arguments, and actually enjoy making a point
Every lesson is tailored from ongoing diagnostic assessment — no robotic textbook drills, no “copy out the model answer” shortcuts.
STUDY SKILLS THAT SAVE SANITY
Organisation is everything.
We’ll build a long-term revision and study plan that turns frantic last-minute cramming into calm, daily mastery.
Students learn how to plan, break down tasks, check their own work, and revise in ways that actually work — not just feel busy.
Every strategy is research-backed, battle-tested, and designed to stretch their mind, not their bedtime.
FEEDBACK THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
Forget “expand your ideas” and “try harder.”
My feedback is specific, actionable, and tracked on a growing list:
- What you’ve mastered
- What you’re still refining
- What’s next
Mistakes aren’t fatal. They’re fuel.
Each session builds momentum, clarity, and a growing sense of control — not confusion.
Parents can expect regular snapshots of progress: honest, structured, and jargon-free.
WHY IT WORKS
Because real success isn’t scoring a great grade by luck — it’s building skills that last long after the exams.
The goal is independence, confidence, and sharp thinking:
the kind that shines in essays and life.

Review

Perfect! Great Tutor, has an ability to connect with the sudent. Provides comprehensive feedback after each lesson.
Perfect! We had a great experience with Stephen, who provided a sort of a "crash course" for our child before English GCSE exams. He was really good at addressing areas that needed improvement, filling gaps in knowledge, and presenting information in a clear and structured manner. Stephen equipped our child with effective tools and strategies for tackling both text assignments and exam questions.
One aspect we particularly appreciated was the regular feedback provided to us as parents. It was always clear which areas had been covered, what the next steps were, and how our child was progressing. This transparent communication reassured us that our child was on the right track.
Overall, we are very satisfied with the results. Our child's confidence and skills have significantly improved thanks to lessons with this tutor. We highly recommend Stephen to anyone seeking focused and effective exam preparation support.- Lovely people. Azelia is very efficient with gathering and sending information and takes a greta interest in her son's study. Her son is a very polite and attentive learner.Stephen's response :
Perfect! I’m so glad we took the plunge with Stephen. We selected him for his background but the way he gets through to my daughter, who is very tough to please, is even more impressive.
She lacked confidence but now looks forward to English and her grades have already improved.
His feedback is the best I’ve had with detailed updates on performance, problems and what steps need to be taken to reach the next level.
Thanks so much Stephen!
I can’t recommend him highly enough. Snap him up while you can!- Great student! Highly engaged and open to new ways of looking at things.Stephen's response :

Stephen is simply amazing! His patience and dedication to helping me improve my writing skills have truly made a difference in my understanding and confidence. With his guidance, I was able to transform from a C student to achieving an A* in my English Literature exam. I am grateful for his guidance and support, and I am so lucky to have such a talented tutor by my side. Thank you for all that you do!
I had the pleasure of being taught by Stephen for IGCSE English Language and Literature for about 2 years. Through his superb teaching style, I managed to achieve both 9’s in English Language and Literature - and now because of this I’m able to apply to medical school with ease knowing that I have exceeded all the English Language and Literature criteria. Personally, I found that Stephen has a unique ability of breaking down those complex ideas into more manageable pieces which made a very engaging learning enviroment; something that was crucial to me being able to develop and think from different perspectives. I highly recommend Stephen if you’re somebody that wants to aim for the best of the best whilst also enjoying learning!
I’m in year 7 and Stephen has taught me and my older brother for a few years now. I’ve learnt how planning can really help create amazingly descriptive stories and now we’re even doing extracts from the GCSE anthology which is for much older kids. So I’m already learning how to analyse before anyone in my class!
Hi! My name is Adam and I'm in Year 10. Stephen has been teaching me for 5-6 years and has helped immensely in English. I went from getting 4 and 5's in English to getting 9's in my GCSE's (not just English!) He's very easy to talk to and helps with not just English but helped me with studying, revising and getting into a routine!
I can’t believe Stephen’s taught me since I was a tiny Year 5! As I write this, I’m a few weeks away from my GCSEs in Year 11. In that time, he’s helped me to organise all of my studies (not just English) creating a schedule that’s helped me to get good grades but also makes sure I have enough time for me. He has always believed in me, even when a school test went wrong. He explains things really well, and if I don’t get it, he finds other ways to say it. He’s fun, makes jokes (sometimes funny ones) and is very easy to get on with!
As a student of English language and literature, I’ve found that it has improved a lot since we’ve been covering poetry and analysis. Stephen has been a great teacher especially when explaining concepts and texts. All my three brothers smashed their exams with grades 8s and 9s due to his classes. I feel super comfortable asking questions and feel more motivation/interest in English language and literature.
As both my younger brother and myself quickly found out, Stephen uses different methods with each student. The all-round knowledge and even the commercial awareness he has (which is vital to my legal degree) is also very impressive. With knowledge of history and current affairs in today’s society, Stephen provides an in-depth breadth of knowledge to his students.
Stephen always teaches me in much more detail than we cover in class. He makes me feel capable enough to tackle difficult work and I’m enjoying English much more at school because we have already done the work in the tutoring classes. Writing analysis can be confusing but Stephen’s got a really clever way that uses colors to help me work out exactly what needs to go into my essays to help me reach a high grade.
The approach that Stephen used was very different to the teachers that I’ve had in the past. He actually teaches us how to think about things. As a result of this I have finally passed English on my third attempt. His knowledge of the subject is unbelievable which is another reason why I passed my English exam. (not only passed but got a very good grade!)
I’m one of Stephen’s current Grade 11 students. Since Year 7, Stephen has been a fun tutor for both me and my brother, (and even my older sister). He always has a special way of breaking down tough ideas like analysis in a system which helps a lot. He is also the reason why I have managed to get better at English

Stephen's tutoring technique allows me to memorize more efficiently. His effect on my English grades is huge. He is amazing with anthology and helps me understand everything there is to know. His analyzing skills get me grades I never thought I could get. Overall his teaching is something that could help anybody in English.
