About Ruth

I’m an English tutor with a background in literature, art, and film, and I’ve now been tutoring online consistently for around a year and a half across English, literature, EFL, creative writing, and humanities-based subjects. One of the things I enjoy most about tutoring is seeing students become more confident in their own thinking and interpretations.

Before moving into tutoring full-time, I spent around ten years working in the film industry in the art department and as a scenic artist on productions including Barbie, Wicked, Wonka, and Rocketman. It was a very creative and collaborative environment, and I think that background still shapes the way I teach — I’m very interested in interpretation, storytelling, attention to detail, and helping students look at texts in a more thoughtful and imaginative way.

My lessons are usually quite discussion-led and tailored to the individual student. I’m particularly interested in close reading and helping students make connections between ideas, rather than just memorising information. I try to create a relaxed atmosphere where students feel comfortable exploring ideas, asking questions, and developing confidence in their own voice.

Alongside tutoring, I work as a visual artist and illustrator, and I’m currently developing a series of illustrated children’s books. Outside of work I spend a lot of time reading, drawing, cooking, visiting museums and galleries, and travelling when I can. Academically, I hold a First-Class degree in English Literature from Queen Mary University of London, as well as an MA in Literature from the University of Oxford.

My lessons are discussion-based and tailored to the individual student. I teach a mixture of English, literature, EFL, creative writing, philosophy, and humanities-based subjects, working with both secondary school students and adult learners. I have over 700 hours of online tutoring experience across one-to-one lessons.

A large part of my teaching focuses on close reading and helping students engage more deeply with texts and ideas. Rather than relying too heavily on memorised responses, I encourage students to think critically, make connections, and develop their own interpretations. I’m particularly interested in helping students organise their thoughts clearly and express themselves with confidence, both in discussion and in writing.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes long, although longer sessions are possible depending on the student’s needs. I adapt lessons to the individual, whether the focus is improving reading comprehension, developing analytical thinking, building confidence in spoken English, or exploring literature and creative writing in more depth.

Academically, I hold a First-Class degree in English Literature from Queen Mary University of London, followed by an MA in Literature from the University of Oxford. Alongside tutoring, I also work as a visual artist and illustrator, which strongly informs my interest in creativity, storytelling, and attention to detail.
