About Shulin 姝霖
Hi, I'm Shulin! I grew up speaking Mandarin and graduated recently from the University of Toronto with a degree in Statistics and Sociology. My schedule is quite flexible right now, so finding a lesson time that works for you should be easy.
I'm also a trained soprano, which turns out to be surprisingly useful for teaching Chinese. Tones are basically music, so I'll help you train your ear to hear the melody in every word until the right tone comes out naturally.
My sociology side loves the stories behind words, so expect little detours into why Chinese people ask "have you eaten?" instead of "how are you?" And when it comes to learning, I believe in steady progress: a little every day, no pressure, lots of encouragement.
Fair warning: my black kitten may occasionally walk across the camera to check on your pronunciation.

My lessons are for beginner, intermediate and advanced learners, and I shape each one around your goal.
If you want to speak Mandarin with confidence in real life, our lessons will be conversation based. Beginners will build a solid foundation in pinyin（拼音）, tones（声调） and everyday phrases. Intermediate learners will work on longer conversations, listening and reading. Advanced learners will focus on sounding natural: idioms, everyday slang, the subtle differences between similar words, and discussing real topics like news, work and culture.
If you are preparing for the HSK, our lessons will be more structured. We will follow the vocabulary and grammar for your target level, practise with past exam questions, and review the areas where you lose the most points, so you walk into the test knowing exactly what to expect.
After each lesson, I will send you a summary of what we covered along with a recording, so taking notes during class is not required and you can review everything any time. Between lessons, I will also send you short daily practice tasks to help you build a steady habit.
My goal is to create a relaxed and encouraging space where you feel comfortable speaking Chinese, and where mistakes are always welcome.
