About Shinji

Hi, I'm Shinji — a Japanese native with a passion for languages and a story you might relate to!

I was born and raised in Japan, but with Chinese parents and family spread across both China and the United States, speaking only Japanese was never an option. I grew up navigating Mandarin Chinese at home and eventually took on English to connect with the world around me.

That's where everything changed. As I pushed through the challenges of learning new languages, I discovered something unexpected — it's genuinely fun. Every language opened a door to a entirely new culture, a new way of thinking, and a deeper understanding of the world.

Today, my English is at a C1 level, and I communicate confidently in daily life here in the United States. But more importantly, I know firsthand what it takes to go from zero to fluent — the strategies that actually work, the pitfalls to avoid, and how to stay motivated when it gets tough.

That experience is exactly what I bring to your Japanese lessons. I don't just teach the language — I teach it the way a real learner understands it.

That experience naturally led me to teaching. I previously taught English at a private school in Japan, helping students build real communication skills from the ground up. Now, based in the United States, I host a Japanese-English language exchange group in Washington D.C., where I work with American learners to develop their Japanese in a fun, conversational setting. Seeing people grow through language — just as I did — is what drives me every day.

My teaching approach is built on three key principles: learning should be fun, it should connect to your real life, and you need someone to give you meaningful feedback.

In my sessions, I customize every lesson around your personal interests — so you're not just studying Japanese, you're genuinely enjoying it.

But what does it actually mean to "speak" a language?

To me, fluency is the ability to actively use the sentence structures and vocabulary you know — not just recognize them, but deploy them naturally in real conversation. With that goal in mind, every session follows a simple but powerful three-step framework:

① Input → ② Output → ③ Feedback

Input — You'll learn sentence structures and vocabulary that native Japanese speakers actually use in everyday life. By "sentence structures," I mean ready-made chunks of words that act as building blocks for natural speech — for example, in English: "It's … because …," "I'm … enough to …," or "… instead of …" Japanese works the same way. When you build a sentence from scratch every time, it slows you down and leaves room for errors. But when you already have a structure in place, all you need to do is slot in the right word — which makes speaking simpler, faster, and far more accurate.

Output — I'll introduce conversation topics tailored to your life and interests, and we'll speak in Japanese together. This is where your skills come alive.

Feedback — After every conversation, I'll give you targeted feedback so you can spot your errors, understand them, and sharpen your Japanese with each session.

This cycle repeats and grows with you — making every lesson a step closer to the fluency you're aiming for.
