About Harmonia
I’m a lifelong musician and educator offering online lessons in guitar, mandolin, electric bass, songwriting, music theory, and ear training.
From my earliest memories, rhythm, harmony, and melody were part of everyday life in a family of working musicians. Growing up backstage at my father’s band shows and playing the music of my grandparents and parents gave me a deep love for both performing and teaching. Later, inspired by jazz and classical recordings my grandfather shared with me, I went on to study formally at Rhode Island College, where I performed with the Chamber Orchestra, co-wrote and premiered an original work titled “Water,” and received both the Bicho Memorial Scholarship and a Special Talent Award.
My playing and teaching blend classical fingerstyle technique, jazz-influenced harmony, and a strong rhythmic feel. In addition to opening for the Spin Doctors with my trio, I now perform and record with my wife, violinist/fiddler Alicia Farias, as the duo Virginia James. We have two studio albums to date available on all streaming platforms: After the Storm Clears, and Time and Time Again.
For students, I offer a focused, supportive approach:
• Guitar, mandolin, and electric bass: solid technique, great tone, and musicality across styles.
• Songwriting: turning your ideas into complete songs with structure, lyrics, and harmony that support your story.
• Music theory and ear training: practical tools so you can understand what you’re playing, recognize chords and progressions by ear, and feel confident creating your own music.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, my goal is to help you connect your ears, hands, and imagination so you can make music that truly feels like your own.

The lesson curriculum will be tailored to the ability level and goals of each individual student. The best results come from a an approach which combines traditional music instruction (theory, ear training, and reading) and organic performance based instruction (learning your favorite music)! Each student will face different challenges on their path to music excellence. I specialize in focusing our efforts in those specific areas rather than using a broad, one size fits all approach. Learning what to practice should be secondary to learning “HOW” to practice. Whatever we practice we perfect so let me help you to learn how and what to practice so you can achieve your music goals starting today!
