About Oswald
As a dedicated music educator and accomplished performer, I bring years of professional experience and advanced conservatory training to every lesson. I earned my BA in Classical Bass Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, furthered my studies at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and completed my MA in Music at the University of Kansas. Alongside my academic training, I have performed with renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Victor Wooten, as well as major symphonies and ensembles across the country. My lessons combine a strong foundation in technique and music literacy with a personalized, engaging approach that meets students at their level. Whether you are a beginner just starting your musical journey, an intermediate player seeking growth, or an advanced student preparing for auditions, I will guide you with patience, expertise, and encouragement. What sets me apart is the breadth of my experience as a multi-instrumentalist and my commitment to tailoring lessons around each student’s unique goals. My mission is to inspire confidence, nurture creativity, and help students discover their fullest potential through music.

As a tutor, I believe that music education should be both structured and inspiring. My teaching method combines a strong emphasis on solid technique and music literacy with an engaging, student-centered approach. I tailor lessons to each individual’s goals—whether that means preparing for conservatory auditions, building confidence as a beginner, or exploring new genres as a more advanced musician.
A typical lesson begins with warm-ups and technical exercises, followed by focused work on repertoire chosen to balance challenge and enjoyment. I incorporate ear training, sight-reading, and rhythm practice to ensure students become well-rounded musicians. Each session concludes with achievable goals and positive reinforcement to encourage consistent growth.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my breadth of expertise as both a performer and educator. With training from the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and the University of Kansas, along with professional experience performing alongside world-renowned artists and symphonies, I bring a deep understanding of performance standards across genres. My wide instrumental range—strings, piano, guitar, woodwinds, brass, and voice—allows me to connect with students of many backgrounds and interests.
I teach students of all ages and levels, from young beginners to advanced musicians pursuing professional opportunities. My lessons are equally suited to those seeking a solid classical foundation, exploring jazz or contemporary styles, or simply wishing to enrich their lives with music. Above all, my goal is to make music meaningful, enjoyable, and empowering for every student I work with.

Ozzy is a terrific instructor and musician. He is very patient with our son during piano lessons. Our son has learned so much in a short period of time.
Our son has been taking piano lessons with Mr. Backus for over a year, and the transformation has been incredible. From the very first lesson, Mr. Backus demonstrated not only remarkable musical talent but also exceptional patience, warmth, and teaching skill.
He has a gift for meeting children where they are — blending structure with creativity in a way that keeps learning exciting. Our son looks forward to every lesson, and that enthusiasm speaks volumes! Mr. Backus doesn’t just teach notes and technique — he nurtures confidence, discipline, and a genuine love for music.
Over the past year, we’ve watched our son grow from hesitant beginner to confident performer who proudly shares his songs with family and friends. Mr. Backus celebrates every milestone and gently challenges him to go further each week. His balance of professionalism, kindness, and humor makes him a rare gem in music education.
If you’re looking for a piano teacher who truly inspires young musicians and builds both skill and character, Mr. Backus is the one. We feel incredibly fortunate to have him guiding our child’s musical journey.I give Mr Ozzie my highest recommendation! He is very flexible and kind to my six-year-old son who is learning how to play the piano. After one year of lessons, my son can read music and play the piano with songs in treble clef and bass clef! His approach with my son is really personalized and he works with my son’s personality to build a strong rapport.
Mr. Ozzie also coaches, my teen daughter in the flute and her ability to play high notes, with strong posture and breath control, and to read music significantly improved with his kind instruction. He is currently helping her apply for a flute scholarship to high school I highly recommend Mr. Ozzie!Ozzie is the best! He is teaching my 15 year old daughter how to play bass guitar, and she loves her time with him. He makes it fun, and she has come so far!
