My approach as a tutor is simple!!
Step 1: Asses the problem and content the child does not understand.
Step 2: Simplify the concept to the bone and emphasize the origins of the concepts at hand:
Step 3: Explain the concept, slowly building layers on complexity and practice.
Step 4: Do practice problems at various different difficulties to get used to the concept.
Step 5: Reintroduce concept periodically to keep up to date.
