About Kim
Hi, I’m a media literacy and digital storytelling tutor, and a native English speaker from the United States.
I help tweens and teens learn how to understand, analyze, and create media. In my classes, we explore films, YouTube videos, social media, and hands-on digital storytelling projects.
My background combines academic film and media studies with real-world media production experience. I hold a BA in Integrative Studies from George Mason University, with a concentration in Arts & Culture and minors in Film & Media Studies and Global Studies. My academic work focused on both media production and media analysis. I learned how stories are created, how they shape the way we think and communicate, and how they function within cultural and social contexts.
Alongside my academic training, I spent several years working in video and photo production, including time at a local NBC affiliate as a broadcast line producer and web producer. In that role, I worked directly with news content, helping shape broadcast material and adapt it for digital publication.
In addition to my media background, I have nearly a decade of experience working with youth in educational and community settings. I’ve facilitated programs for adolescents on complex and sensitive topics, and I specialize in creating learning environments that are safe, supportive, and engaging.
This combination of media production experience, academic training, and youth mentorship shapes how I teach today. I help students not only understand how media works, but also gain confidence using it to express their own ideas and stories.
My teaching style is interactive, discussion-based, and project-focused. I encourage students to ask questions, think critically, and experiment creatively as they develop their own digital storytelling and media analysis skills.
My goal is to help students become thoughtful, confident media consumers and creative storytellers.

My teaching style is discussion-based, creative, and supportive. I believe students learn media literacy and storytelling best by actively engaging with media, asking questions, sharing ideas, and engaging directly with the content.
In a typical lesson, students might:
* analyze scenes from films or videos
* discuss how music, editing, images, and storytelling influence audiences
* explore themes in social media and online culture
* practice visual storytelling techniques
* production courses include student's work on their own digital storytelling projects
I encourage curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking rather than memorization or rigid “right answers.” My goal is to help students become more thoughtful consumers of media while also building confidence as creators and communicators.
Lessons are adapted to each student’s age, interests, and experience level. Some students are especially interested in movies and film analysis, while others are more excited by YouTube culture, visual storytelling, writing, photography, or creative digital projects. I enjoy helping students connect their personal interests to larger storytelling ideas and media concepts.
This class is best suited for tweens and teens who enjoy:
* movies and television
* YouTube and online media
* creative writing and storytelling
* photography and visual art
* discussion-based learning
* creative digital projects
No advanced technical skills are required. The focus is on creativity, communication, observation, and thoughtful engagement with media rather than professional filmmaking or advanced editing software.
I aim to create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable experimenting creatively, sharing ideas respectfully, and developing their own unique perspective and voice.
