About Shannon

I began my tutoring journey in my final year of sixth form; I tutored both a private student in GCSE mathematics and held group sessions with KS2 primary school students in a range of sciences.
In both cases, their confidence and understanding grew throughout the year and they were able to achieve grades they were proud of. My GCSE student was accepted to the sixth form of his choice, after being told he may not meet the requirements earlier in the year.

I ensure that my students understand WHY they are doing things and not just blindly memorizing the methods; This allows their problem solving skills to evolve so they can tackle a wider range of questions and develop a stronger foundation in the subject. I aim to help my students enjoy tackling challenging problems and encourage them to persevere through them, even when it seems difficult.

Having received an A grade in both A-level mathematics and physics, I now study engineering at the Russell Group university of Southampton. My passion for both of these subjects led me to choose a degree that incorporates and requires a strong foundation in both. I would love to help more students deepen their understanding!

I usually begin by introducing a topic and asking the student what they already know relating to it. Based on their response, I can then build off of what they know.

I know that every student has a different learning style and so, I often explain certain concepts in different ways to make it easier to understand. This includes using analogies without all the technical language, which ensures they understand the core idea better.

After giving them more information, it's important to apply it; I would work through an example, asking the student what they think the next step may be. Once the first example is completed, they can attempt the next examples more independently. I make sure to constantly ask WHY they are doing a step to test how well they understand the concept behind the question and to avoid them guessing.

They can ask any questions throughout and I'm happy to go over anything they don't quite understand. I believe in letting the student lead from the second example onwards, only stepping in if they ask for help or they are going very off track. This means they'll rely more on their own knowledge rather than the teacher to find the answer.
I go at the student's own pace, staying on a certain topic for however long they need. Moving them on to another when they aren't ready just means they will have to relearn it later.

At the end I would give them some new exercises to complete and introduce prework for the next topic if they are ready to move on. This means they can come to the next session more prepared and we can focus on what they are struggling with.
