I believe the main reason a student loses interest in a subject is because the concept is not clear & lack of understanding in basic concepts. So, I focus on clearing the concepts thoroughly and then letting the student learn & understand the lessons and do exercises themselves. It gives them the feeling of accomplishment and that encourages them further.
