About Ashley
I am Ashley, a Maths and Further Maths tutor based in Cottingham. I studied Mathematics at the University of Hull, where I was awarded the Department of Physics and Mathematics student prize. I'm an experienced data analyst, so I use maths and statistics every day outside of the classroom as well as in it.
At university I was the person people came to when they were stuck on a problem set. I ended up spending a lot of time in calls or at the library explaining ideas to friends until they clicked. Tutoring now is basically a more organised version of that.

When things stop making sense, the job is to find the missing pieces and explain them from a new angle. If a standard explanation has not clicked, I will try something different, for example a more visual approach, a concrete example, or an alternative derivation.
A typical lesson is 1 to 2 hours. In our first session we will:
- have a quick chat about the course, target grade and any recent tests or mocks
- see where you are up to on the curriculum and what areas need attention
- create a plan for what to focus on next
For online lessons I normally use Microsoft Teams. I join the call from my computer and also from a tablet. On the tablet I share my screen and write on a digital notebook as we work through questions together, so you can see every step clearly. After the session I export these pages as a PDF and send them to you so you have a clear set of notes and worked examples to refer back to.
If you have a tablet and stylus, we can also use a shared online whiteboard so you can write your own working during the lesson and I can see it in real time. This works well for checking exam technique and helping you practise setting work out properly.
For in person lessons I usually meet at a neutral location in Beverley or Cottingham, or at the student's home if it is practical to get there from Cottingham. I am happy to work in a hybrid way so we can decide week by week whether we meet online or in person, depending on what is practical.

Non-driver so travel is charged at a rate of £10/hr + public transport fare.
Typical examples (per visit):
- Cottingham: free (no extra charge)
- Beverley: around £12 extra
- Hessle: around £18 extra
We will always agree any travel cost in advance before you commit to regular in-person lessons.
I offer hybrid in-person and online lessons. For example, we can use online lessons as the default and arrange occasional in-person sessions when requested.
