About John

I believe that every student can succeed, they just need the right tools and self-confidence. In my life, math always came easy, but English never did. My English SAT scores were in the 300’s. With that score many believed that I should not have gone to college. Well, I did not accept that and went on to get my associate’s, bachelor’s, and then masters. I struggled getting my bachelor’s again due to difficulties in English, but I still went for my master’s. Master course work is all papers and at the end is a capstone which is a 70-page paper give or take five pages. I state all this, because if I, who struggled with English his whole life, was able to write a 70-page capstone graduating with a 3.97 then you can succeed in math.
In adult education, one must pass all five subject tests and one of them is math. Seventy-five percent of the test is algebra. I had students who were not able to pass this test for years come in for one last shot. I told them that if they came to every night class, I would help them succeed. In the four years that I worked for adult education, only one student did not pass the test. Unfortunately, she did not return to classes due to life circumstances. In those four years, I worked with over one hundred students during the time there. With college students, they were receiving D’s and after we worked together, their average quizzes and tests became nineties. This is not because I am a miracle worker, you as the student must put in the time. What does happen is that I am able to provide tools and help you see the problems in diverse ways until they make sense.

My philosophy is that every student learns differently, and the teacher/tutor must be patient in the process. I have worked with students beyond algebra, but it has been a while. I also believe that if I cannot answer something, that I will look and quickly refresh, and that time is not charged to you. Most students take algebra by the tenth grade. However, juniors and seniors take it as well. Adults going for their Hi-Set also need algebra to pass the math Hi-set.

A typical lesson plan goes this way for me. First, I ask the student on what they are working. I start by going through the process of how that topic works. For example, if you are working on exponents then I will teach you the process, give you a few questions, and when you answer them, I ask you to say to me aloud what you are thinking. I then ask, how long will you be spending on this in class, and what is the next subject that the teacher will cover. If possible, we will cover that as well, otherwise we will cover it the next time. Finally, once you are comfortable with the subject, again let us use exponents, I then ask you to teach it to me as if I had never seen the material before. This shows me that you not only understand the material but are able to recall distinct parts of it.

I have always been patient with my students, and this is the reason that so many adults that I have worked with went on to pass the math Hi-Set exam. I gave them the tools and belief to succeed, and that is what they needed.
