About Mark
I started my professional life as an academic, earning an advanced degree in Communication and publishing quantitative and qualitative research. I found the focus on publication took me away from working with students, so I started working with high school students in private and therapeutic schools. During that time, I acquired a residential teaching license in North Carolina. Tutoring is a way for me to keep pursuing that passion for helping students learn.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading and writing in science fiction and fantasy. I have two wonderful dogs who let me join them hiking, and enjoy the active music scene in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Most math teachers at the high school level are math people. They took calculus or more and have seen the peak of the mountain. They come back with a method to get there and offer it to students. For math-inclined students, it works great. For others, not so much.
I take advantage of number simplification and virtual white boards for collaborative thinking. Alternative visualizations are also helpful. One-on-one tutoring enables an individualized approach that can help students get past the big hurdles.
I have also published academic work with statistical methodology. I taught AP statistics for several years. If you have a project or class assignment, I'm happy to help design experiments, assign groups, or interpret data.
