About Edwin
I've been tutoring formally or informally for as long as I can remember. I was often quick to pick up on concepts at school and spent many hours interpreting and explaining the ideas to classmates who were struggling. I get a lot of joy from finding a path to that 'ah-ha!' moment and have honed those skills for many years.
I've found that I have a talent for breaking down complex problems into bite-sized chunks, as well as finding and clarifying whatever misconceptions may be hindering a student's progress. If a student is earnest but fails to grasp a certain concept, it is almost always a failure on the part of the instructor.
As per my academic and professional summary, I originally went to college for media production and spent several years working in either science communication or news media. I was successful in this field but had my curiosity ignited while travelling abroad. I decided to return to school to study philosophy and mathematics, with the long-term goal of becoming a researcher in cognitive science. As a mature student who believes deeply in lifelong learning, I hope to help you or your child develop a curiosity and passion for understanding. Regardless of the specific lesson content, the overarching goal will always be to explore connections to the bigger picture, motivating further learning.
I am very flexible as to the style of each individual lesson. I can craft a lesson plan that fits a student's needs or help a student work through practice problems or coursework. I always find that the greatest success is found by letting the student's questions, confusions, and curiosities guide the course of the session.
I am comfortable teaching most subjects for elementary school and middle school, as well as math, science, and English at the high school level. I can even teach essay writing, logical analysis, and some first-year mathematics at the university level.

Informally tutored me through a University course we were both taking, and I wish could have Edwin in all my courses! Anybody can learn the form and explain their thought process; yet, besides Edwin being having a deep understanding of the subject, he is a remarkable listener that can identify the root of where other’s misunderstandings lie, and amicably help them overcome it—which is the mark of a great tutor!
