About Amanda
I hold a master's in Biochemistry after leaving a PhD program early to earn a living to take care of my family. I found once I was outside the lab, science was no longer problem-solving, but just reviewing others' work. IT entered my world as small projects while I was still working in science and voila - problem-solving was back! I have been in IT now for 15 years. I volunteer in two local neighborhoods currently to do Math & Reading mentoring - it is honestly the best part of my week! I am an Aunt to 10 amazing kids and love doing homework with them! My favorite accomplishment with them to date is getting my one nephew when he was 7 who used to hate Math to want to do multiple extra days' worth of Math homework when I visit because he thinks it is fun with me! I love Reading and read 193 books last year. I also love Math & Science. I believe learning and education are key to a good life for so many of us. I think all people have their intellectual strengths, telling kids they are smart, & celebrating their wins is extremely important.

I like to customize my lesson plans to the students, whether this be bringing props into the lesson for kinesthetic learners, writing notes with drawings for the visual learners to help the information sink in best, or repeating verbally the concepts for auditory learners! I believe we learn best when taught to our strengths and when our teachers understand how our brain works. My husband has ADHD and I have many neurodivergent friends that have taught me the standard ways of teaching & learning do not work for everyone. This has taught me to think of a learning concept from multiple angles. It has also taught me to be able to change the ways concepts are described and practiced for students. I like to get to know my student first and adapt lessons as we go along to continue to best meet their needs!
