About Maria

I am a dedicated professional with a strong academic and athletic background that reflects my discipline, perseverance, and leadership. While balancing academics and athletics, I excelled as a tri-sport athlete in high school and earned a full athletic scholarship to Belmont Abbey College as a member of their NCAA Division II women’s basketball team. I have experience tutoring children in elementary and middle school in subjects such as grammar, reading comprehension, and basic math, alongside high school and college-level sciences. My well-rounded approach allows me to connect with students of all ages and adapt to their unique needs. I currently volunteer at the Hope House Foundation in Huntersville, a transitional housing program for women and children, where I provide tutoring and childcare services. This role is deeply rewarding, as it allows me to make a meaningful impact by supporting children academically and emotionally during challenging times. My previous experience as a crisis counselor with the Crisis Text Line further enhances my ability to approach situations with empathy, patience, and understanding, ensuring a nurturing environment that promotes growth and confidence. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, friends, and my cat, as well as playing board and card games and watching sports. These interests keep me grounded and help me connect with students on a personal level, fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment.

My teaching method is centered on patience, adaptability, and fostering a supportive learning environment tailored to each student’s unique needs. I believe that the best way to teach is by breaking down complex concepts into smaller, digestible steps while drawing connections to real-world applications to make learning more engaging and relatable. I encourage open dialogue, where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring their curiosity.

A typical lesson plan begins with a brief review of prior material to ensure a solid foundation, followed by an introduction to new topics, using examples and analogies to make them more accessible. I incorporate practice problems or interactive activities to reinforce understanding and conclude each session by addressing any lingering questions and previewing upcoming topics.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my academic background and personal experience. With a Bachelor’s in Biology (Magna Cum Laude) and a minor in Chemistry, as well as my current pursuit of a Master’s in Bioinformatics, I bring a deep understanding of the sciences and their practical applications. My time as an NCAA Division II student-athlete taught me discipline, perseverance, and teamwork, all of which I apply to tutoring by motivating students to push through challenges while feeling supported.

My lessons are designed for high school and college students, particularly those studying biological sciences (particularly genetics), chemistry, or math. However, I have experience tutoring children of all ages and other subjects. My goal is to help students not only succeed academically but also develop an appreciation for these subjects and their potential impact.
