• Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

  I speak Tagalog fluently because it is my native language. I was born and raised in the Philippines, where Tagalog is widely spoken. Growing up surrounded by the language made it a natural part of my identity and daily communication.

• Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

  Our most famous hero, José Rizal, is one of the most iconic figures representing our language and culture. He was a key figure in the fight against Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. He was a patriot and a talented writer, poet, physician, and philosopher. His works, written in Tagalog and other languages, are still studied today and continue to inspire Filipinos around the world.

• Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

  One tradition I particularly admire is “Pagmamano”—a respectful gesture where the younger person takes the hand of an elder and presses it to their forehead. It’s a beautiful symbol of respect and a way of seeking blessings. I also love the expression “Bahala na,” which is often translated as “Come what may.” It reflects a deep cultural trait of courage and trust in a higher power when facing uncertain outcomes.

• Why does speaking this language matter to you?

  Speaking Tagalog matters deeply to me because it is a powerful connection to my cultural identity and national pride. It allows me to express who I am, preserve our traditions, and pass on this rich heritage to future generations. It’s more than just communication—it’s part of my soul.

• What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

  One of the main challenges in learning Tagalog is its unique sentence structure and the use of affixes that can change the meaning of words. It takes time, consistency, and practice. To make learning easier and more enjoyable, I suggest listening to Tagalog music, watching Filipino movies or TV shows, reading aloud from Tagalog books, and practicing speaking with native speakers. Having a personal or online tutor also helps a lot. Even reading aloud in front of a mirror can boost confidence and fluency—it's fun and effective!

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

  Here’s a short anecdote about my language-learning experience. In college, my classmates came from different provinces and spoke different dialects, but it was the Tagalog/ Filipino language that brought us together. It helped us connect, understand each other, and build friendships. That experience made me appreciate how powerful Tagalog is in uniting people, and it inspired me to keep using and teaching it with pride.

• How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

  While Tagalog is my first language, traveling to different regions of the Philippines where dialects mix with Tagalog, like in Visayas and Mindanao, taught me how dynamic and rich our language is. It helped me appreciate the different ways Tagalog evolves and blends with other local languages, and made me more adaptable as a teacher.

• What makes you a Superprof in language?

  What makes me a Superprof in language is my genuine passion for teaching and for the Tagalog language. I believe that being a great teacher goes beyond knowing the language— it’s about building meaningful connections with students and creating a supportive environment where they feel safe to make mistakes and grow. I strive to make every lesson engaging, personalized, and encouraging. In short, it’s not just about language skills—it’s about heart, patience, and dedication.
