About London

I am someone who values your time and will ensure to create efficient activities that simultaneously promote fun in learning but also discipline. Having worked with an array of students who have unique disabilities, fears (e.g., water, jumping, etc.), learning needs, and aptitudes for swimming, I have always found myself to be able to improve not only their swimming abilities but also their confidence through dedication and discipline with building rapport through games. I believe in the power of affirmation—especially after pushing students to go beyond what they believe they can do.

Hello, my name is London, and with my four years of teaching/tutoring experience, I believe in the power of creating structured lessons tailored to the needs of the individual student while simultaneously making learning fun! Every lesson I will provide a clear scheduled plan and homework to accelerate your learning while also ensuring a clear line of communication. To start, I will assess you or your child's skill level and then create a plan using an S.M.A.R.T. progression methodology while continually monitoring progress and making adjustments based on your needs/progress. I am a very hard worker who is always punctual, responsible, and eager to teach students no matter what the background!

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

My parents first enrolled me into swimming lessons when I was 3 years old and ever since, I've loved to swim (now been swimming for about 17 years!). Now haven been given the opportunity to share my passion with others with the bonus of creating healthy lifestyles and habits for all my students.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

My passion for swim instruction stems from my love of medicine and teaching. Currently, I'm in the life sciences program at the University of Toronto (St. George campus) with the dream of becoming a doctor (more specifically, a psychiatrist), and I believe it's crucial for all doctors to abide by the healthy lifestyles that they prescribe for their patients. It's one thing to say as a doctor to someone, "you need to exercise more and lose weight" and another to be able to understand the building blocks and struggles of fitness so you can actually coach, at a far greater success rate, your patients into living their best life. As a swim instructor and licensed personal trainer, I know how to reach and coach a wide range of people effectively so they can accomplish their fitness goals. To see that progress and make people realize their goals and potential is my passion.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Like everyone, I've experienced my fair share of both strong and poor teachers, and having a coach who is supportive and competent can be nothing short of life-changing. Being able to help people achieve their goals whether it be for fitness, living healthier, building discipline, having fun, investing in a new hobby, etc, is an incredible experience because you feel the impact you have on their lives- just as the great teachers I've been fortunate enough to have have had on me. To be a Superprof, I believe that you need to make learning exciting and to share/celebrate your student's victories. Everyone as a learner feels far too embarrassed and self-conscious about their progress and efforts. Lending praise and making your student feel good about their progress is essential for their own motivation to return the next day- which is really the biggest hurdle in starting anything new: coming back the next day.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

My teaching approach was inspired by my grade 12 calculus teacher who was always patient, would go above and beyond for her students, celebrate your success, and be there with you to help achieve your goals. She met you where you were at and approached every student's individual needs with nuance, but always respect, effort, and care.
  • What are your keys to success?

Taking everyday one step at a time and keeping focused on how to move forward. You can only compare yourself to who you were yesterday, and I keep in my students' minds that nothing they do has to be perfect- all that matters is improving yourself gradually from where you were before. Consistency is key, and to have consistency you have to not fall for the perfectionist or comparative trap. Be only focused on doing a little bit better with every step and understand that progress is not linear and that you are writing your own story, not living up to someone else's.
