About Vin
I began tutoring in first grade. I was an alert child, and finished my worksheet early. So I went around the class, and repeated to other students how I solved their problems. In the gifted program at my elementary school, I worked with another accelerated student to help peers with their math and science problems. Something I learned from my cohort was a sobering lesson - being disagreeable and on edge does not facilitate good instruction. In high school, I had a lot of free time during work for family, so I spent the time reading SAT and AP exam books. This aided me in retaining an imperfect image of entire courses, which I used to construct a tutoring system at my school. I received a college scholarship and majored in finance. I learned many lessons from my business cohort - the importance of listening, of communicating, of expressing empathy, and of being creative enough to find mutually beneficial solutions for all. I have since returned to work for my elderly parents, but have been very diligent to grow my STEM understanding.

My teaching method begins Socratic. I ask the student the key questions of STEM mastery: 1. What are we even doing? 2. What do we know? 3. What are we looking for? 4. What techniques can we utilize to find our answers? 5. How can we reinforce the learning so the student can retrieve the knowledge and problem-solving under critical conditions? An example of a lesson is on fractions. Q: What is (1/2) + (5/6) 1. What are we even doing - we are adding two fractions 2. What do we know - we know two fractions can only be added if their denominators are identical 3. We are looking for a way to reshape the fractions so they share the same denominator, and so can be added 4. We can state: 1/2 = (1/2) * 1 = (1/2) *(3/3) = (3/6) 5/6 = 5/6 we can now add (1/2) + (5/6)" 3/6 + 5/6 = 9/6 = 1 + 3/6 = 1 + 1/2 5. We can have the student construct his own fraction addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems, and try to stump the tutor with an impossible fraction problem to solve :)
