About Danielle

Being a teacher has been the one thing I have been certain of since I was a little girl. I was the one who always wanted to play teacher and assist my teachers in any way that I could. Being in a classroom with students is something that will always bring me the most happiness. There really is not anything better than sparking students’ curiosity, fueling their love for learning, and helping fill their tool belt to be successful adults. Some strengths’ that I have reflected on in teaching experiences that will help me as a successful tutor are being extremely organized, prepared, always finding ways to connect with students, and understanding that even as an adult I am continuously learning. I have found how important it is that students see that even their teachers are humans. That we will make mistakes, we will plan something that we think is perfect and it completely fails, but that life will continue, and we will learn from our mistakes.

Teaching is sparking students’ curiosity. Young students are naturally curious and want to learn. Teachers start to fail students when they do not keep their students’ interests. This is where it is critical to build rapport with your students. Knowing them, their interests, and their learnings styles help prepare the teacher for lessons, gives insight on how to differentiate to meet the needs of all students, as well as give a variety of forms for assessment. So many teachers stick to a cookie cutter, blanket solution and expected that to reach the needs of all their students. However, through research as well as attending Youngstown State University, I have learned that students deserve an individualized education. This individualized education goes beyond just how you prepare lessons. Personalizing the students learning consists of how they receive the information, how they get to interact with the information, and different forms of assessment to allow the students to use their strengths to give a more genuine representation of what they learned. However, when the teacher is always doing what is best for the student teaching is rewarding in helping shape the character and life of young learners. Teaching is also trial and error, planning a lesson, reflecting on it, and continuously working on improving. Knowing how the students’ brain works, how they develop, and how to help create connections within their brain to learn new information. Lastly, teaching is knowing that an effective classroom is student centered, and a community of learners. Students should be involved in discussion—with the teacher, and with each other. Students do not make many connections to the content if it is not meaningful. So, just sitting and listening to a teacher teach all day is not as meaningful as them being involved. Keeping this is in mind it is also important for teaching to still be modeling examples of excepted behavior, academic outcomes, and community.
