About Professor Federica

I am a licensed teacher with 10 years of experience, specializing in Italian, Spanish, and English. My extensive education and professional experience in New York, Madrid, and, of course, Italy have given me a thorough knowledge of all three languages. This enables me to implement precisely the right teaching strategies to overcome any learning difficulty.

I am dedicated to delivering high-quality lessons tailored to your needs and designed to achieve outstanding results. Over 10 years of teaching in schools and privately, I have created lessons that are engaging, interesting, and highly effective. My students start speaking the language after the first lesson and eagerly look forward to the next, and I have a proven track record of all my students passing their Italian exams with the highest scores, including high school Italian courses, the AP Italian Language and Culture exam, and the CILS, CELI, and PLIDA certifications.

I hold a Teaching License (teaching certification), issued by the Department of Education. A teaching license is the official professional credential for teachers and is a legal requirement for teaching in public schools. To obtain it, a teacher must complete formal training and be assessed against state teaching standards, which cover teaching practice, professional conduct, and thorough knowledge of the subject. Private tutoring is not regulated, so anyone can offer lessons, but a tutor with a teaching license has met the same professional standard as a teacher in the classroom. For you, this means lessons that are carefully planned, based on proven methods, and focused on measurable progress.

I strongly believe in lifelong learning, which is why I continuously invest in my education. Teachers must stay up to date with the latest teaching strategies, approaches, methods, and technologies to ensure the best learning outcomes, and I bring them into every lesson. I work with schools, companies, universities, and private students from all over the world.

My Italian lessons are tailored to your goals, level, and learning needs, so that you can start speaking naturally and with confidence. I teach learners from beginner to advanced level: children taking their first steps in the language, K–12 students, college students, adults who need Italian for travel or work, those moving to Italy, and candidates preparing for the B1 citizenship exam or the B2 exam required to study in Italy. I also work with many Italian Americans and people of Italian descent who have always wanted to reconnect with their roots but never had the chance to learn the language.

With 10 years of experience teaching both online and in person, I use specific teaching strategies and a communicative approach to keep every lesson engaging, structured, and effective. Each lesson is carefully planned and includes a variety of activities that constantly improve all four skills: reading, speaking, listening, and writing. I speak Italian as much as possible, switching to English whenever you need a clear explanation. Every lesson includes structured materials, including PowerPoint presentations with grammar explanations in English, so that you understand each topic thoroughly. Homework consolidates what you have learned and ensures steady progress between lessons.

The focus of the lessons depends on each individual need. For conversation, special attention is given to speaking activities, vocabulary, and the ability to express yourself fluently in any situation. For travel, we cover practical Italian for ordering food, asking for directions, and talking to locals; and for work, the vocabulary and communication skills required for emails, meetings, and everyday interactions with Italian colleagues and clients. Young learners follow engaging, age-appropriate activities that make their first steps in Italian enjoyable and build a solid foundation. Middle and high school students receive targeted support with grammar, vocabulary, and written and spoken communication, including preparation for high school Italian courses and AP Italian to achieve the highest grades. Candidates for the CILS, CELI, and PLIDA certifications receive in-depth preparation in every skill, together with exam strategies for each test to achieve the highest possible score. If you are moving to Italy, I prepare you to speak fluently, and I offer practical advice on the issues that may arise once you are living there.

Many learners come to me because they hesitate when they need to speak, find native speakers hard to follow, or are confused by verb tenses, pronouns, and prepositions. Others forget vocabulary soon after learning it, or lack a clear structure to follow. My lessons are designed to address exactly these difficulties.

I have taught hundreds of students and received hundreds of reviews on different websites. Students and parents choose me because the lessons are well prepared and genuinely effective; in fact, they see results from the very first lesson.

One of the most important aspects of my teaching is helping you convey meaning effectively in Italian. Teaching a language goes beyond explaining grammar rules and providing lists of vocabulary: you also need to learn how to express yourself naturally, avoiding literal translations that often result in errors and hinder clear communication. By learning how meaning is expressed in Italian compared with English, you will be able to speak as Italians do. With a thorough knowledge of both languages, I am well equipped to guide you toward a deep and comprehensive understanding of the Italian language and culture.

My aim is to give you the skills to communicate independently in real-life situations, whatever matters most to you. To begin, please send me a message describing your goals, and I will plan your first lesson around them. Join the hundreds of students who have already learned with me.

Find out more about Professor Federica

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Italian fluently because I am a native speaker.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

If I had to choose a historical character, I would name Dante Alighieri. I wish I had known him; he probably spoke with the typical, lovely, Tuscan gorgia. A fictional character would be Jep Gambardella, the disillusioned writer of the awarded Italian movie "La grande bellezza". I love the Italian he speaks, a very high register (educated and refined) with a thick accent from Naples.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I like dialects, I find them so amusing and incredibly expressive. They represent the ancient soul of the Italian language.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Italian is the language of fashion, art, delicious food, and breathtaking views. Whether you are a fashion student attending shows in Milan, an art lover visiting our beautiful 'open-air museum' in Rome, or just want to spend an unforgettable summer in Tuscany, you should be able to speak the language.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Italian is a language with a high degree of inflection, which is why it is necessary to learn grammar topics step by step by studying and practicing. Honing one's speaking skills is also paramount, the communicative approach helps students to learn new words and get used to the pronunciation and the fluency of real-life conversations.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I started lessons at university, I did not understand anything since the professors spoke English and Spanish (the languages that I was studying). After a while, this full immersion helped me to improve considerably!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I moved to London soon after graduating. I had been studying English for years but living in an English-speaker country gave me that native-speaker fluency. Students should always strive to speak the language as much as they can by studying in groups and traveling a lot.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Thorough knowledge of Italian grammar, vocabulary, and the different Italian registers; lifelong training to find new and effective teaching strategies; 10 years' experience with individual students and at school; ability to create teaching plans based on students' needs, and, last but not least, a genuine love for my job: "choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."
